Hi all,

Have any of you guys installed a perimeter alarm system onto your plots? We're talking now to the alarm guys Mar Menor Alarms - they installed the alarm at our current place and I've been really pleased with it.

They suggest a perimeter alarm (as well as an alarm to the main house), as it alerts you to anyone entering the land at the boundary - before they even have chance to get to the main house. Given we have a plot of over 5,000 m2 we think it's worth it, as it sets some kind of initial alarm off and lights up all the plot with flood lights. There is some secondary control that sets the main alarm off if further detection onto the plot is made.

Security is important to us and although we have 4 big dogs, we feel that this is a good investment (along with camera's around the house external side).

Thoughts from those that have done similar things very welcome.

Regards, Carl

I live in a penthouse. The terrace could be accessed from adjoining properties.

I bought four infra red beam units from a place in UK (which specialise in perimeter protection, fence line, gates etc.

I have set them up so that they cover movement across the entire terraces. This meant two areas.  So two double beams.

I wired the beams so that if one beam was broken it did not trigger the alarm (bird flying through) two broken would. The bottom beam is set about 15 inches from the ground the second about 15 inches above that.

The alarm is an off the shelf DIY kit.  The whole thing was under £100

In the ten years I have not had the system triggered by an intruder but I have every confidence I am protected.

PS
I had initially tried a very expensive movement detector but found that when it was hot it failed to detect any difference between body temperature and the surrounding temp. Its in a box somewhere.

I just found that I bought the beams from:     dfc-automation.co.uk

This part of the email reply I received, showing price

.......              If it is photocells you are after they are £19.23 per pair so you would need two pairs plus £9.50 all plus VAT.
