The airport at Corvera is ahead of the revised schedule and they now hope to open it in the spring of 2011.They are working on it 24/7.
The high speed rail link from Madrid to Cartegena is also progressing at a pace and will stop at Corvera airport. Corvera airport will then be the only airport in spain to be connected to a high speed rail link imho.
The Murcia government is being very proactive in its help. Chanel 7 is the local murcia tv chanel and keeps you up to date with progress reports and helps you with your spanish at the same time!

So if it is opening in Spring 2011 when will flights from the UK start?
Does anyone know how far this airport is from Mojacar - is it nearer than San Javier airport?

Yes, but only by about 15 to 20 minutes.
