I need to connect a light inside my lockup in the underground parking. Does anyone know if there is a way of disconnecting the elctricity to my lockup?

Hi

We asked if there was a way to turn off the power and were told just to make sure the light switch was turned off and this was how my husband fitted our light.

I am no expert but I would be careful about relying on the light switch.  If it is wired up wrong on installation by the developers then I think you may still find that one of the wires could still be live.  We had ours fitted by an electrician who did it without bothering to find out how to turn off the main supply, but that's what he does for a living.

Thanks to you both for the quick replies. When I was there last week a chap in the parking said that there was a main board somewhere. Maybe I'll ask the admin folk in the port.

We fitted a light in ours no problem.  Just made sure the switch was off.

What a coincidence, I just joined the forum to ask this exact question and found it had just been asked -spooky!

When I last visited, I looked at fitting a light in our store, but, before doing so, I tested the wires at the light position with the switch turned off and on. Power showed on the tester both times. I then tried with our consumer unit turned off, power was again proved. I came to the conclusion that the lights must come off 'The Landlords' supply and was about to ask the forum who I could speak to on site. As you probably guessed I am not an electrician. Would the common always be live? - I don't fancy getting frazzled by leaving it to chance. Maybe our wiring is different to Pitby's -  Any advice welcome.

Paul

We're in block 10 (as I think Ann is) and didn't have a problem at all.  I'm no electrician - and believe me, neither is my husband!! - but he fitted the light with no problems whatsoever.  I was a little nervous, as had read before from Ann that the wires were live, but it seems that when my husband tested, he seemed comfortable with carrying on with the fitting.  Works fine!
