Found these references:

Green Algae - This is the most common type of algae, also with a gelatinous coating protecting it against chemical warfare. Unlike black algae, green algae, doesn't attach itself to pool walls, but it does cause the pea soup or green haze look of the neglected pool. Fortunately because this type of algae floats in the water, chlorine shock treatments can effectively eliminate it, make sure you brush and clean the pool in conjunction with plenty of pumping and filtering time.

Symptom : Cloudy Green

Diagnosis

Algae is present in the water. This suggests that chlorine levels have dropped too low or it has become ineffective.

Cure

Shock dose with unstabilised chorine to kill the algae (10ppm for green tints, 25ppm if the bottom of the pool is not visible.) Brush off remaining algae on pool surface (including underwater lighting and step ladders.) Wait 24 hours. Backwash filter to clear out dead algae. Use water clarifier to remove haziness.

Prevention

Maintain chlorine levels at around 3 ppm. Use an algicide (or chlorine with added algicide) regularly if algae becomes a big problem.

If you are using stabilised chlorine and testing indicates adequate levels of chlorine but you are still getting algae, see Diagnosis 2 above

Paul,

Your information is spot on.

A good friend of mine owned a Caravan Park in the UK until 2 yrs ago with an outside pool. On hot summer days (yes they did occur) when the pool had high useage, he found that to prevent the algae/cloudy water problems, that he had to close the pool for an hour at lunch time so that a booster of chemicals could be applied. His was an old pool with an old filter system, hence need to close pool whilst the chemicals diluted around the pool. Would have thought that DV's systems ought to be able to cope though as long as the right levels of chemicals are being used. If the wrong mix is used though, the pool water will quickly get out of balance given the high usage in the summer. It is normally quite easy to correct though if the correct dosage is applied.

Could always ban use of sun tan creams, which is one of the main culprits, but doubt that would go down well. If everyone showered off before going in the pool it would help though.

Pool filter systems for out door pools probably have not changed in a number of years. The filter systems sold today look the same as the ones installed years ago (except in large municple pools where the pool chemistry can be quite different). The out flowing water goes though skimmers to filter big bits fly leaves etc.

The water recirculates though a sand filter which collects small bits. When fine bits are in the water they go thru the sand filter without collection, so a coagulant is added to cause these to stick together to form larger bits so they can be collected.

Its best to add the shock at the end of the day so that it has over night to balance thoughout the pool.

You will not ban the use of creams but people should shower b4 entering the pool.

I check the ph and chlorine levels at the pool where I have a town house from time to time just to check the pool guy.

I use a bromine system in my hot tub, but the chemistry is very similar.

Hi Everyone

A couple of the showers around the block 10 pool aren't working as they seem to have rusted up.  I mean't to report them while over last but got distracted by the bed blockers and lack of sun beds.  The lady pool attendant was working on the block 10 pool for quite a while on one of the days and added a lot of chemicals.  People were in the pool at the time which was a worry.  My grandaughter also had very sore eyes.

If you concerned about the levels of chlorine and the ph before children go in you can buy a test kit for about 6 euros or less. A kit will do many tests.

It takes 5 mins to test the water its very easy - fill the 2 water tubes to the level add 5 drops of each reagent to the appropriate tube shape the tubes with the top and look at the colour scale.

Chlorine levels in pools should be about 1 ppm, tap water can be up to 4 ppm.

Stinging eyes is normally whenn the ph level is wrong, it should be about 7.4, the same as eye fluids, neutral is 7.

I may have to invest in one of these test kits.  I was unable to use the pools after the first few days of our last trip and was very uncomfortable all day and night as the water brought me out in a sore ecezema type rash.  I am prone to this happening in pools where the balance is not right (it only tends to happen on hols and in public hot tubs).  it never hapens even if I swim daily in our local David Lloyd health club or the neighbouring spa who keep the water conditions spot on.
