Discover the Most Recognised Spanish Wines in the World 2021
Monday, April 12, 2021

Familia Torres, Vega Sicilia and CVNE are at the top of the ranking of the 50 most recognised brands of the prestigious British publication 'Drinks International', which includes five other national wineries.

Familia Torres has once again been chosen as the most admired wine brand in the world according to the ranking The World's Most Admired Wine Brands 2021 produced annually by the prestigious British magazine Drinks International. Of the 11 editions of this ranking to date, it is the fifth time that the Penedès family winery, which has just celebrated its 150th anniversary, has obtained this first place.

The exclusive list, in which only 50 brands manage to enter, is the result of a survey of more than 200 experts in the sector in 48 countries, including sommeliers, wine buyers, wholesalers, bar owners, wine writers, educators and other specialists. In it they choose their five favourite brands taking into account aspects such as the quality and consistency of the wine, the value for money and the strength of the brand. Being an indisputable international benchmark and continuing to produce a range of quality wines at different levels, combining the best of tradition and modernity, are some of the reasons why the jury has considered placing Familia Torres in that first position, according to the specialised magazine.

The renowned Vega Sicilia (Ribera del Duero) occupies third place in the ranking, behind Argentina's Catena. The winery founded in 1864 in Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid), currently owned by the Álvarez family, rises six places compared to last year's list.

The Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (Cvne), in eighth place in the ranking, is the third most admired Spanish brand in the world. The family winery, which was born in 1879 in the Rioja town of Haro, has risen 15 places this year to place itself in the top 10. Its rise means that Spain is the country with the most admired brands among the top 10 in the world, while Australia has two and Argentina, France, Chile, Italy and Lebanon, with one each.

If the complete list of the 50 brands is taken into account, the countries that contribute the most wineries are France (with 11 mentions), Spain (with eight) and Italy (with six). The list of Spanish wineries is completed by the Riojan Campo Viejo (position 32) - the Catalan from the D.O. Pla de Bages Bodegas Abadal (37), the centenary Ramón Bilbao (43) - founded in Haro (La Rioja), which has been included in the ranking for three consecutive years, the Catalan Raventós Cordoníu (47) - one of the oldest wineries in Spain, founded in 1551 and famous for its Cavas, and La Rioja Alta, which debuts on the list.

Some of the prettiest towns in Aragón can be found in Teruel province by the Matarraña river, such as Valderrobres and Beceite. One of the best walks in the region is the Parrizal (Parrissal) trail a truly wonderful walk along the river. On the last leg of the trail, hikers can cross wooden footbridges, walk through stunning gorges and refresh their weary feet in the ice-cold water pools which are crystal clear. If you are interested in discovering the route here is a link to a guide.
