The Curmudgeon

The curmudgeon is a miserable sod. He likes to have a moan. He tackles subjects which many foreigners living in Spain agree with but are too polite to say anything.

The Eye on Spain Weekly Digest

A puréed and simmering carrot soup in a pot with a spoonI am posting here to try to establish whether I have any support for my argument. Private posts "complaining" to the EOS administration have remained private and I suspect are not widely read by readers.

My "complaint" revolves around the criteria for selecting the ten "best" articles each week.

    [Sound Cloud]

It surely cannot be right that places 1, 4, 5 and 8 in this latest digest, published today, are allocated to blatant advertisements. In the previous week there were also four adverts. The week before that there were five!

My argument

A puréed and simmering carrot soup in a pot with a spoonAren't articles like those thought-provoking ones by Lenox Napier, or interesting travel pieces by Ian and Spain, Karethe Linaee, or mac75 of more interest to your readers?

Aren't posts which get lots of "clicks" or which generate many comments more worthy of a top ten place?

Lenox Napier [La Voz de Almeria]

I would have thought that articles about the current horrendous weather problems and Spanish and European / world politics would be of more interest than, say, an ad for a townhouse in Murcia.

Final word

Wouldn't a post about the death or re-birth of socialism been of interest?

Or about the efforts of the Coalition of the Willing in Europe?

I hope this article provokes a reaction from Eye on Spain readers. Maybe it will top the list of most commented posts next week?

I await with bated breath.

I have to say, I agree with you. There are some excellent articles/blogs here on Eye on Spain, and they could use more promotion.
I write my blogs for my own pleasure and purpose, and of course like to see them featured in the weekly digest.
The main problem is, I think, the lack of participation by other readers. Put a 'like' on the column (the writer appreciates it) and maybe add a comment...
I usually link to at least one essay from Eye on Spain each week in my own news digest ('Business over Tapas').
Anyway, don't be discouraged from posting, as we all like to read about this magnificent country.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your comment. I’d love to share a little context on how we structure the EOS digest to give you a better picture of what goes on behind the scenes.
Regarding the "adverts," we generally limit promotional content to just two slots per week (usually 4 and 8). These are reserved for featured properties and area guides to support our paying customers.
Regarding the other slots you mentioned (1 and 5):
These were actually informative articles/guides, rather than ads. The blog they are published on is a very popular blog, ranking top this week. These articles/guides often come from our partner site (the same group), ThinkSpain.com, which provides popular Expat content that we feel is valuable for EOS readers thinking about moving to Spain.

A quick note on the ranking:
Please rest assured that the 1–10 numbering isn't a ranking of quality. It’s simply a layout of what we think will be a diverse mix of topics for that week. To keep that diversity high and be fair to all our writers, we generally aim to feature a maximum of one article per blogger each week.
Because you produce such a high volume of great content, I know it might feel like we aren't showcasing enough of it! We truly appreciate the effort you put into your posts, and we will continue to do our best to promote your work as often as the schedule allows.
Thanks again,

Ian
