Jackie Heath; pianist. Right! Grade 7s … not Grade 8. No CRB yet but it wouldn’t be a problem in acquiring one. No teacher’s certificate as in ‘scroll’. However, both in London and here in Spain privately tutored pupils: In the UK all passed with honours at The Royal College of Music.

For us ‘oldies’ it is a strange world we now live in. In 1998 I lectured at the University of Liverpool. No qualifications. The fact that I was indisputably Britain’s best-selling and most popular poet was enough. At their invitation I write for the Extramadura Tourist Board, A Place in the Sun magazine; scores of similar, yet I have no formal writing qualifications! As a devotee of classical music I wonder if Beethoven and Mozart could get a job in today’s market; or Constable be recognised as a painter?
