Record low interest rates

Hi
I am just wondering what people are doing now that we are in a kind of permanent low interest rate environment. Many people were previously living off the interest of savings and a UK pension but with these low interest rates, how are people making up the difference in their income?
I've noticed many in Spain no longer go out for dinner as regularly as before and fly home less frequent. but how long can we survive without getting a return on our savings?
