We are coming to Calahonda, Costa del Sol  this winter for four months.  Do you know if it possible to register with a doctor and if so how to go about it. Any help would be apreciated. Many thanks

If you stay PERMANENTLY for 3 months then you must register. That will create problems, which I won’t  go into.

So I would suggest you take a trip during your stay, say to Gibraltar (maybe get your passport stamped or make a credit card transaction, so you can if necessary, prove you left Spain).

I don’t think that as a visitor, you can register with a doctor.

Been there and done it this year, no problem at all, but you must get on the padron (everybody should).

We are in Riviera next to Calahonda. If you want to have a chat and talk it through no problem, we (Angie) has helped a lot of people sort things out here.

Just send a private message through this board and Angie will be glad to help.

Costa by registering on the Padron one is saying  they are living in the town and that the property is their main home.  That being so they must register in Spain and then they become tax resident.

Stick to my first advice and you not get any nasty surprises.

If you haven't done so already you should apply for an EHIC card which will grant you access to emergency treatment here in Spain or anywhere else in Europe.

More info here;

Johnzx

When we first came to Spain we registered with our local doctors surgery as temporary residents.  To do this we took a photocopy of our UK E111 and passport and a copy of our padron.  This then enabled us to make an appointment at the doctors if needed.  The temporary certificate lasted 3 months.  This was then renewable at the end of the three month period.  As I understand it now (as it has changed recently)  should you need to see a consultant payment may be needed for this (presumaby this would be recovered when returning to the UK).

Since the above we have such registered with the doctors surgery in La Cala, and we have used their services.

I have recently (discharged only yesterday) been having treatment as an out patient at Costa Del Sol Hospital. Not on my E111 but as someone who is registered with the spanish health system.

True to say we have come out of the UK NHS in order to do this as we spend a lot of time here in Spain (we use our EHIC card in the UK if we need treatment as i did recently on a return visit to the UK).

When we registered on the padron we understood it mean't  "we spend a lot of time in spain" and this of course means the local junta can get an allowance (money) from central goverment in Madrid. Bye the way it does not make you tax resident by being on the padron.

Being on the padron is a bit like being on the electoral role in the UK (it also means we can vote in local elections) it also gives other benefits such as cheaper Sapnish language class's.

As for telling someone that is going to be in Spain for 4 months to "leave the country for a day" during that time is nothing but utter rubbish.

John, giving your opinion on a board such as this is one thing but telling someone to diregard other advice (factual in our case) is disrespectful to other posters. We have done everything by the book since we started coming to Spain and have never had a problem.

By-the-way. Being on the padron does say not that your residence in Spain is your main home, once again utter rubbish.

Our main home is still in the UK.

Or choose to take advice from others who think they know, better Your choice.

NB
The European Health Card which took the place of the E111, is just as it has always been for visitors ONLY.  But as you will be visitors (not having come to Spain) you will be able to use it.

Costa
don't wanna give you problems but when you sign on the Empadron it is saying under Spanish Law, that you are resident and living at that address.  I know some authorities allow people to sign on when not really permitted but that is because the town hall get a subsidy from Regional Government  for the number of people on the Empadron.   It is to cover the costs incurred, policing, schools, doctors etc by residents.
I supect you are not fluent in Spanish. If you are read what you have signed.

John. Read it ! have done previously.

So why did they let us sign on the padron, and many others like us ?  Yes they get money from central government, but why do central goverment let them get away with it ? obviously works though.

As for causing me problems, as i said we have done everything by the book and when not sure we ask at places where people will know  (local coffee morning at "age concern" is good place to start) or even at the town hall in La cala, they have been polite and very helpful, especially if you smile and manage a word or two of Spanish.

We have been coming to Spain for many years now and (try) to keep up with the ever changing legislation, so far we have done a good job of it.

Just out of interest we have helped many other people with these sorts of problems, escorted them to the various places, such as town halls, police stations ect and never encountered a problem where someone in office has said "you can't do that"

Just saying it like it is.  But i do find some of your comments (especially to other posters) rather rude, sometimes ill informed, and dictotorial.
