Hi All

Just wondring if anyone has any advice.

We only moved here (La Cala de Mijas) this year so we missed the registration process for school places last March. We have a 3 year old and I have been trying to get her a place in one of the local schools.  However the 3 schools in our catchment area are all full for that age. We have been down to all the schools and they took our details and said they would call if any places became available. They also said that there a long list of 3 year olds waiting for a place this year. I know that school is not mandatory until they are 6.

Question: if there is a long list of 3 year olds waiting do the Junta create extra classes or is it just a case of waiting till next year? Also should I wait to hear from the schools or is it better to go back again this week and see if any places become available?

Any advice much appreciated. Thanks

Sarah

Hi Sarah

As you already know, it's not compulsory at that age but our school in Manilva has created an extra class this year for "infantil" so it is possible that they can do that in La Cala too.  I assume it's relative to how much pressure is applied on the school, but not necessarily so as the Directores have very little say in Spanish schools.

I would definitely go in there as often as possible.  It's probably unlikely that kids will be dropping out but you never know.  There are quite a few expats leaving so some places may become available.

It's a tough one.  Your only option may really be a private school.  Check out the private Spanish schools, not international ones, as they tend to be cheaper and everything is in Spanish.  Saying that, some of the Spanish private schools we know are also quite full and they too have waiting lists.

Best of luck with it, we were where you are now six years ago, so I feel your pain!

Justin

Have you tried the foreigners dept in the Town Hall - they can sometimes be helpful/resourceful

Good idea.  The Mijas town hall I think has quite an active foreigners department.
