Anyone know how to get the internet into the apartment (cheaply !) ?

We are using a usb modem from Vodafone Espana, so don't need a landline. With a contract, it costs €39 per month and no upfront charge for the device. Seems quite reliable and really was 'plug and play'. And it's moble, so if you have a laptop, you can connect anywhere there is a phone signal, not just in your apartment.

The monthly limit may not be enough if  you're planning on downloading films or any other really heavy usage, but we're fine with emails, attachments and a moderate amount of email browsing.

There are "hotspots" nearby - I would check with your laptop and see if you can pick up a signal next time you are over.

Up the Forth World Road , at Coto Real, we hope to have Wifi installed, subject to our AGM in March 09, and you might get a signal from there.

The installers, Y Internet, might be interested in providing Arenal Duquesa with their own set up.

There is a small internet cafe next to Paparazzi restaurant, only 2 minutes from our front door and seems to be open all day until very late at night.  They only charge €1 per hour, so we are happy to use that until we move down there permanently in a few years time.

Have you thought about getting internet on your mobile?  I´ve just signed up to the minimum 9 euro/month Vodafone.es contract and for an extra 12 euros + vat per month, you get unlimited internet browsing on your phone.  You will obviously need a decent phone for this.  The free Nokia I got with my Voadfone contract was a bit basic, but I just use the SIM card in my (decent) UK phone.

It´s fine for emails, browsing etc, but not for downloading films etc and speed is very good.  I´ve found it really useful using it with the google maps application.  It helped me find the police station (for my NIE) and social security office in Estepona!

Thanks folks for all your replies, think I'll use the hotspots  for now since we're only there occasionally,  the bar in the marina seems to collect people with laptops and not bad food either !
