We have been using www.Doyouspain.com for quite a while now and have always been pleased with them. The car hire firm we usually get through Doyouspain is Auriga Crown, clean cars, quick service, fuel full/full, no excess to pay, and they don't push the 'extra' insurance (tyres/windscreen.etc) if you don't want it.

However last time we went in May we got Record hire cars. We were told at the desk we had to pay 15 euros for this 'extra' insurance. When I said "no thanks" they said we had to leave a credit card payment of 600 euros in case of damage (would only be taken if damage caused). Needless to say we paid the 15 euros.

Being a 'Victor Meldrew' I complained to Doyouspain when we got home, and got a quick reply apologising for any upset and saying they would look into it. Today I got the 15 euros back from Record.

Only a small amount but I knew it was wrong as Doyouspain advertise that there are no exras to pay. It was good service on their part to follow this up and it means I will carry on using them.

Just thought I would share that with you.

What car hire firm do others use?

Brian & Lorraine

Hi  Brian,

I have made 3 complaints to Do you Spain regarding our hire car, but they have not got back to me.  Feel ignored.  I contacted them via their web site using the contact us tab.  How did you contact them?

Hope your recent trip was good.

Hope all is well with family.

Ellen

Hi Ellen

Just contacted them through their website, got back to me by email quickly. money back in account within about 3 weeks.

When I was out a couple of weeks ago I got Record again, same conversation but this time stood my ground. Said no to extra charge for damaged wheels, lost keys etc and refused to leave deposit on credit card when asked. Girl at reception just said ok!!  SO IT IS NOT COMPULSARY! pay it if you want, but you don't have to.

Recent trip great, very hot though  36 - 38 degrees every day. swimming pool was very refreshing.

Best wishes

Brian

We had the same hassle with Record car hire booked through doyouspain in june, I said no to extra insurance and no to the credit card deposit their reply was that we have your card details if there is any damage, when I mentioned that doyouspain claim there are no extras they stopped pushing it.

I have booked again with doyouspain for our next trip out, and have been allocated record again.
So I have Emailed doyouspain to complain and to request that we dont get the same hassle.

We have used doyouspain a lot over the last 30 months, most of the time it has been ok, we had 2 cars from Auriga Crown that we had problems with in that time one the power steering pump was running with no oil in it, and another one had 2 bald tyres on the front, hard to see in the car park as its dark in the parking area.

So far, we have always booked through www.carjet.com and (touch wood) have never had any problems. The car hire company has been various, e.g. Auriga Crown, Solmar, Goldcars etc. I imagine it depends on the best deal. To date, cars have always been fine and we have had no complaints. Full/full if under 3 days and full/empty if a longer stay.

I hope I havent spoken too soon, as we are out again very soon!!

With Doyouspain if your quote comes up as full/empty (they will always quote you the cheapest quote which may not be full/full) you can contact them by phone and they will change you to full/full. It will be with another company and may cost a few euros more, but you can decide if it's worth changing or not

Actually, I think it just depends - on what, I'm not sure! Because whenever I have checked carjet has always been the cheaper option. I guess it's like flights. You just have to look at all the options every time.

Hi Ellen

No your not "thick" my apologies I was sure I spoke to Doyouspain on the phone, but your right there is no contact phone number on the site. But I did get them to offer to change the booking last time (now I'm totally confused - must be old age!!!!!!!!!)

The only thing I can think of is that there is a phone number on the confirmation email they send you. i haven't got an old Email so can't check.

Next time i book i will find out.

Brian.

We always book with hirecarsinspain (choosing Econorent as guaranteed full/full at Alicante & Murcia) Fantastic prices, beat doyouspain for us each time for 5 dr Citreon C3 option. See driving in Spain main forums.

Hi
Have seen this firm discussed on main site and Econorent has had good feedback. As has been said already "you pays your money and takes your choice".

My only problem with Econorent is that I would not hire a car from a white van in an airport car park in the UK and even more so in a foreign country, no matter how cheap. Rather pay a little more and hire from a established national company that works from an office (for all their faults).

But as I say 'that's my choice'.

We have used both can't honestly say there was much difference between them, the 'van' didn't push the additional insurance as much as the ones inside the Airport terminal building.

I thought I would back up what I said.

I have just got some reasonable flights booked for a few days on my own next February and because I am alone, I prefer to drive an automatic out there. My stay is Mon to Fri and these are the three quotes I have had for exactly the same length of time. All quotes are for a basic automatic car.

hirecarsinspain - £115.50
doyouspain - £107.49
carjet - £92.22

I have to say that, every time I have checked, even for manual cars, www.carjet.com has been the cheapest. Added to which, on our recent visit, my husband forgot to take his credit card. The hire firm (Auriga Crown on that occasion) said that had we booked through any other company  they would not have accepted a debit card.

I too would be a bit dubious about dealing with a man in a van!

I've just booked a four door Corsa for 16 days in September

Doyouspain £186
Hirecars in Spain (Econorent) £203
Carjet £202

We booked Doyouspain, another point is important to us is they have no excess insurance payment.

Maybe type of car, when you book, determines different prices.

It pays to shop around

Hi San Miguel!

I hope you dont mind my asking. Do you already have the additional insurance covered on an annual policy?

I am sure you are right about the various prices for car hire. It is important to check each time before you book.
I feel like I am wishing my life away constantly looking forward to our next trip!

Actually, San Miguel, you should click on conditions on doyouspain's website as it states

The rental price does not include damage to tyres & to windscreen ( which is normal practice.)

No one forces you to insure for these but you are liable.
