Spanish Grapes at the end of the year
Thursday, December 31, 2009 @ 9:34 PM

"Cacho de uvas / / Bunch of wine Grapes (Vitis Vinifera)", by Valter Jacinto / Algarve - PT, in flickr.

Just this year, that is finishing, 2009,it is one hundred year old that , in Spain, was invented the tradition of eating grapes the last night of each year --like today, in less than 4 hours (at 12:00 h.)--.It is said that, in 1909, there were a lot of grapes --there was excess-- and the Goverment thought that it should be a good idea to spend the grapes, celebrating the end of the year --one grape for each of the 12 strokes--.Since then, it is celebrated in the Puerta del Sol, in Madrid, with the strokesod the big clock.

Hola Luis,

I really like your blog. I was going to try the grape tradition on New Year's eve but never round to it! There's always next year. Your blog is great! Keep it up.
