My husband and I are U.S. citizens planning to move to Spain as semi-retirees, but applying for a visa appears quite daunting.  We don't plan to work (unless by internet).  We have heard that a year of documented residence (empadronado) allows for an easier path to obtain a visa or otherwise gain the benefits of being legal.  Can anyone help with information about this?

I find that very doubtfull for several reasons. Number one being that to get your padron you will need your NIE, you can not get your NIE if you are not legally living in Spain.
