Hi all, wonder if anyone can give info on NIE numbers.  We are getting to the stage where we will be needing one but were not planning on going to Spain this year.  Can anyone advise if they planning on organsing one from the UK and if so how are they doing it, costs etc.

Many thanks for any info

Hey,

The MRI solicitors (yes I know can be crap etc etc)  are doing it for me in spain, just need to get them 2 certified copies of your passport.  Certifified by a notiary which in the UK are only solicitor and members of the legal profession for the spanish authorities.  As for cost I think i maybe included in their costs but I'll update if they get greedy.

I asked Violette a few days ago (yeah yeah, same same, but so far so good) about this and she advised she can no longer get the NIE for us, even with notarised copies of the passports. She said we now have to do it personally by going to the Spanish Consulate in Manchester or the Embassy in London OR by applying in person in Spain. From all accounts this takes about 12 weeks, they have to send everything to Madrid, they do not issue the NIE from here.

The website gives very little information but a google search will produce some useful stuff.

The notary in the UK is a specialist solicitor, very few are notaries public, you would need to check.

I have just received an email from our Solicitor Carmen at MRI and she said the same thing, if we get it sorted here in the UK at the Embassy then it's around 3 - 4 months, in Spain 2 weeks.  Is there an urgency on obtaining this number, can we afford a 3 - 4 month wait?  Just trying to plan ahead .... for once!

Hope you are all enjoying the lovely sunshine :)

Guys,

Meant to apply earlier but have now been told the same thing and from the yellowpages there is only a notary public in Northern Ireland!

Details below:

Padraigin Drinan

Conway Mill, Conway Street, Belfast, BT13 2DE

Tel: 028 9032 2071

Its off the falls road, I've tired ringing her today and got no reply.

I'll let you know how I get on!

Right Further update, People from NI cant get it from Dublin   you have to go to a specific consultate!  I was talking to the ones in Dublin and they informed that is on a per location basis.  It breaks down like so:

If you live in:-
Northern Ireland, Cheshire, Cleveland, Clwyd, Cumbria, Derbyshire, Durham, Manchester, Gwynedd, Humberside, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, the Isle of Man, Merseyside, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Tyne & Wear or Yorkshire, please apply to:

The Spanish Consulate General, 1 Brooks House, 70 Spring Gardens, Manchester, M2 2BQ. Tel: 0161 236 1233

Scotland or the Scottish Islands , please apply to:
The Spanish Consulate General, 63 North Castle Street , Edinburgh , EH2 3LJ . Tel: 0131 220 1843

And if you live anywhere else within the UK apply to the London office: 20 Draycott Place, London SW3 2RZ, Tel: 020 7589 8989, Fax: 020 7581 7888

Will ring manchester and see if we can do it by post but am not hopeful!

The only other thing is to use a Solicitor here in the UK. I spoke with Carmen at the MRI Solicitors and they have an office in London too which can sort it for you, i think i may go this route, apparently they can sort it in weeks rather than months. Will investigate further and let you know.

It has been a while since this thread was commented on so you may have all your NIE numbers sorted but for those in Northern Ireland, I was told you have to go to London re the solicitor I contacted the solicitor and his services alone was £150.00 in Spain it is €50.00. Take on board the flights and length of time by doing this in the UK you are safer going to Spain..

Guys,

Out of interest is there any people out there who actually have their NIE?  If so can they share their stories of how they got it!   People in recent months may be most beneficial I think!

MB4,

Were you told  not to go to Manchester then?   As its £80 (travel) all in to go there to get it plus whatever the charge is from the consultate.  I would be tempted to do this to kick this off and take my chances.   Could you update this if this option is not available please?

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Peter,

We live in north west Leicestershire and by rights should have gone to London. Manchester is closer so I opted to go there. The man in Manchester was insistant that we should have gone to London but with a bit of flannel and a hopeless look he said he was feeling in a generous mood and processed our application there. We came away feeling rather fortunate that he was in a good mood - he had been pointing at a map on the wall and insisting we should be in London.

Manchester is the correct office for you and I would not like to take a chance on going to the wrong office just in case the person who deals with you is not feeling generous.

It still takes a good 3 months for the NIE to come through, we are not expecting ours until Aug. at the earliest.

On the other hand if you are going to Spain anyway it might be quicker to get it there. Whcihever way you look at it you have to travel to get it.

Good luck

Noel

Hey Guys,

Another update I'm now going to Manchester =0(  bit of a waste of time as Dublin is so bloody close and I have friends there I can visit.   However I just booked a flight from international airport on the 7th Aug for a Meer £30!   So just to get all the info together and get it sorted!

Quick question if you dont have an address in Spain any of advice of what to do?   Put Soliticators address in Spain (don't know if I trust them....)   or does it go but to the consultate and they forward it on?

Any advice is gratefully excepted!

Oh I had a blast lol!  Went to get the flight on Tuesday and Manchester airport was closed with a complete system failure.

However went today and i was grand brought with me 2 passport photos, a copy of my passport (brought  2 only needed 1) , my actual passport, a copy of why I needed the NIE, 2 copies of the application form and a self-addressed enevlope!  girl was dead on, took the info stamp one of the application forms and gave it back to me for my records and bobs your uncle.  No appointment required, whole thing took about 30 mins and reason fo that was there was a couple, looking NIE's, before me who didnt have a clue and asked the poor girl the same questions about 20 times.

As per norm was told it would take 3 months unless I went to spain.  Hopefully in Nov I will have my NIE

NIE certificates arrived today, 3 months almost to the day. Not bad huh!

Very pleased for you, especially after all the hassle in applying for it.

Lets hope the rest of the process is equally quick and simple.

Regards

Noel
