ACTIN, making changes for animals in Spain.

Animal care Treatment International Network has been set up to make changes for the animals in Spain, who suffer abandonment and cruelty. What we plan to do is to bring awareness of the problems to the world’s media. We need to promote education, new legislation and support neutering campaigns. It is necessary to get support Internationally to put pressure to bear on the Spanish government and to persuade them to take more responsibility for the lack of animal welfare in Spain. ACTIN plans in the future to bring about these changes through media awareness. Actin will tell the truth of how it is on an everyday basis, particularly in the country villages of Murcia, where there is a lot of ignorance and abuse. They will tell of what the volunteers deal with and how the abuse of animals is getting worse. ACTIN will endeavor to bring about campaigns for sterilization and education in schools. There is a need for a Society to protect the animals and this is what ACTIN aim to do in the future but we need much support to achieve our aims.

Please help Teddy, our blind Mastin rescue puppy
Sunday, April 27, 2014

I wrote, in part, about Teddy & Tony the Galgo in here

All about Teddy:- he is a pure Mastin puppy, already a big puppy at approx 15/18 kilos, and was bought to guard his owner's home. When he went suddenly blind at just 8 weeks old, his owner planned to take him to the Perrera, where he would have been put to sleep.

When we met Teddy we could not allow this to happen without finding out if his eye problems were curable and to obtain a diagnosis. We didnt want him to be just written off. He was such a happy boy, and so acceptant of his condition.

Our vet consulted an eye specialist in Murcia and it was diagnosed as congenital Glaucoma. there are two types of congenital glaucoma and one doesnt respond to treatment. After 3 weeks of treatment we realised that Teddy has the poor prognosis.

He is such a lovely boy and we have all got to know him, he is funny, confident and full of character and deserves a chance. Sadly, he has to have his eyes removed but we want to try for him.

We need help with his treament and ongoing care.

We are also looking for the perfect home and family for Teddy.

Please contact adoptions@adoptaspanishdog.com  if you are interested in adopting or fostering Teddy.

If you can donate to Teddy's treatment then please send to PayPal admin@actin-spain.com

At the moment Teddy's operation will cost 300 euros. His care and treatment so far has cost more than 200 euros.

If we raise more than we need, we will use funds for other dogs that we have taken in that need care.

For example Tony the Galgo who has a problem with his saliva glands, which must be removed and will cost 200 euros.

Please help us with Teddy and other dogs that we felt were worth a chance....

We have created Teddy's own Facebook page here so you can check his progress.

Over the Easter period we are happy to report more dogs going to their new homes. Transported safely to the UK, thanks to For the Love of Dogs and Cats transport, was Sissy and Orio.

Below: Sissy rescued from the middle of the motorway is now happily settled in Southampton UK.

Below: Orio is also in her new home with her adopter in Exeter, who has also previously adopted Orio’s sisters, Tia and Rosie.

Below: Jes now Warwick, one of the parvo pups who survived after being rescued from the pound with many that died, is happily homed in Spain.

Below: Lara now Emmy, rescued from the pound before she was put to sleep and who evidently had a terrible past life, is now happy in her new home.

To help any of our rescued dogs that are in residency, or to adopt – please contacts us, we have over 40 dogs in our care.  They have been rescued from situations where they would have died, or were ill treated.

Our new website is http://www.adoptaspanishdog.com and if you wish to contribute, so we can continue our work, please sponsor, adopt, donate or foster.

We need as much help as we can muster to continue our fight, for the rights of animals in Spain and to prevent abandonment!

Actin posters to print off
Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Please remember that we dont have to put up with dogs not having food, water or shelter, just because they are in the countryside. If you want to try and do something to help, pass on a leaflet explaining the obligations and laws to the owner.

If you think it will aggravate the situation and the owner is outright cruel, then obtain proof with photos and newspaper date evidence....Actin will help or advise wherever we can.

Actin has a downloads page on their website with posters relating to various situations, including sterilisation advice....in both English and Spanish.

http://www.actin-spain.com/downloads/

The law for animals in Spain passed on 12th June 2013 makes it illegal to cause any suffering to animals.

English translation for the Water, Shade, Feed Advice Leaflet.  (See printable Spanish pdf version here)

Some may not be aware that animals suffer just as human beings do. The animals in our care rely on us for their safety and care. We use animals for pets and work and they serve us well, let’s show them the respect they deserve.
If you have animals please be aware of their needs and what may cause suffering.
• Your animals without shade from the sun can cause your animals intense pain and suffering; please be sure that your animal has shade and shelter from the sun, just as you will ensure yourself and your children safety from the sun, your animals rely on you for this
• Your animals always need water to survive just as you do, please make sure that your animals have a constant supply of water, especially in the heat.
• Your animals require, healthy nutritious food for their wellbeing and health, just as you do
• Your animals have to go to the toilet just as we do. They do not like to be in an area where their faeces and pee is. Please ensure your animals’ space is clean.
• Your animals need exercise, a place to run, or a walk on a lead
These are basic principles for caring for your animals, whether pets, working dogs, hunting dogs, guard dogs, cats and livestock. Horses are very vulnerable in fields, please be sure they have shelter.
Animal welfare in Spain has improved and is improving and now laws for their welfare are in place and animal cruelty and neglect is not acceptable anymore.
Please be a responsible owner

Foster homes are always needed MURCIA/CARTEGENA
Monday, April 21, 2014

Becoming a foster carer for our rescued animals is a very rewarding experience, and is a great way for you to help these animals on their way to a better place. If you can’t offer an animal a permanent home, why not help some of these animals on part of their journey?

Of course it is not all sunshine and flowers, some of these dogs and cats have come from very bad places and need a lot of care, patience and understanding to become themselves again. Some will be very scared, hurt, or sick and they need your attention and love to help them get well again.

Sometimes it may take longer than others, sometimes it may not even have a happy ending. But rest assured that however much time this animal spends with you, it will have known much love, possibly for the first time in its life. You will have helped in some small way.

At the moment we are looking for foster carers in or around the Murcia, Cartagena area. If you would like to help, please fill out our contact form to request more information and a home check.

ACTIN's constant dilemma
Sunday, April 20, 2014

From Viv, President of ACTIN-SPAIN

"Please note that Actin association is not set up as a rescue charity, we have no shelter for the animals, or shop as a source of income - our only income is reliant on the good people who donate to us, who believe in what we are trying to do.

We have rescued many dogs and will continue to do so when in a position and if the animals are in immediate danger.

I personally rescue dogs because it's close to my heart and I cannot bear to see suffering but always at a cost of stress and worry about what to do with the rescued dogs.

As most know I have to run a business to survive too

We have no space or funds at the moment. We will try to rescue any animal in immediate danger, of cruelty or death in the local area, but we do need sponsors for those.

Please do look at our website http://www.actin-spain.com  and see why Actin is set up and what we are trying to achieve.

We have chosen the hardest and most complex job in fighting cruelty, as it is a very grey area in Spain but we do have plans, goals and work extremely hard behind the scenes. We are constantly learning and eventually we hope will make a difference but we do need a lot of support and part of that support is that people need to share the load, as there are many abandoned dogs in the area I live.

We are always willing to advise and share and do anything we can but we are not able to do the impossible...thank you for listening and I hope people understand.

Urgent message and request :- Actin is currently unable to take on anymore animals, these puppies are in immediate danger and we urgently need somewhere for them. We will be responsible for their adoptions and will try to raise funds to help them...if anyone can donate to Actin for the care and future of the pups we will be very grateful, the PayPal  address is admin@actin-spain.com or, if someone can offer temporary respite to get them safe (Cartegena area), please contact admin@actin-spain.com

The pups Mum is not in immediate danger and is used to her situation, but we will be getting her sterilised and other dogs with the same owner. We have had an offer of donation to get this done....so now pups are priority...."

News news and unavoidable rescues
Sunday, April 20, 2014

Tony the Galgo, Teddy the blind Mastin puppy, Jake the chained dog being kicked and beaten by his ignorant owner….new legal cases – a microchipped dog found dead!!!

Tony the Galgo was abandoned and wandering around on the main road, he had a problem under his chin and apart from the fact that he was in imminent danger from the traffic, he needed medical attention. One of our supporters offered to sponsor him, so he is now in our care –  but at least he is sponsored. This is really the only way we can help the dogs directly. Actin need more sponsors

The beginning of April we decided we would not take on anymore dogs, as our resources dont allow. We try to use our network of great contacts on Facebook and we are thankful to those that do help us.  Sadly there are too many cases and not enough help, some are emergencies and cannot be avoided, leaving us with no alternative. ……

Actin needs a rescue centre!!!

Below: Come on lad.

Below: Patience is a virtue when catching a Galgo.

Below: Copa the Pointer in season who finally helped to capture Tony

Below: Tonys' safe.

Three tranquilisers and Tony fell asleep by our feet a number of times, as soon as we attempted to catch him he would be off. Eventually a local man brought his lovely Pointer to help – she was in season and just typical of a gullible male, Tony fell for her…. although she didnt fall for him, but it was the perfect situation to get that slip lead on. Off to the vet and the good news that he is free from med diseases and we are waiting to hear about his abcess.

Then there was a blind pup that the owner would leave in the Perrera – contacted by local guardia civil for help we agreed to try to help him. The Guardia are helping us and we need their support, so it was the least we could do. We are waiting for the vet report on the pup, now called Teddy and hoping someone may sponsor him.

BelowTeddy is blind but now safe.

Can you sponsor Teddy? If so please contact admin@actin-spain.com

The chained dog being kicked and beaten by its owner, was witnessed by a neighbour. The dog is now safe in our care and we will be treating it as any cruelty case and so will not allow these kind of things to continue, if they are brought to our attention.

Below: Jake, free at last from his horrible chain

Below: Jake is saved.

Jake the chained dog, whose collar was cutting into his neck; he was so distressed and in spite of discussion with his owner, his ignorance of treatment of animals was so appaling we had no alternative but to take the poor dog, with the agreement of the owner, who realised he could not look after this dog. Can you sponsor Jake?

Jake’s story is nothing new in the spanish countryside; chained to a tree and just there to bark, to protect a few sheep on a farm.

Viv, President of ACTIN-SPAIN said "I spotted him when trying to rescue Tony the Galgo and felt the usual sadness – especially when he desperately tried to reach me and jumped up so distressed by his chain and his lack of attention. Fed a bread stick and completely ignored by his owner but it's nothing unusual. Then the neighbour told me how he is kicked and beaten and one day escaped from his chain. His punishment when he tried to jump up and lick his owner, was to be slammed onto the tiled patio and locked up to his tree again. Yesterday we talked with the owner, who was so utterly ignorant about how to treat an animal and, when we explained what was right and his legal obligations, he said he would get rid of it. The dog was so distressed and was constantly in that state, that we offered to take him, it was agreed and now Jake needs a sponsor if anyone can help. We will ensure that the Farmer does not own any more dogs…."

More cruelty cases.

A dog found killed and was microchipped; Actin will be dealing with this and hope that the results will encourage more people to report cases such as this, as too many are still being ignored. This is the only way to deal with cruelty until something changes and a a recognised body is put in place to look after such things. In the meantime Seprona are overworked and cannot cope and so Associations like ours has to do something, otherwise nothing will ever change.
