The endless rescue work of Angie McCready, on the Costa Blanca

Angie moved to the Southern Costa Blanca inland from Alicante 9 years ago from the UK. She hadn't realized the plight of dogs here until she arrived. She was shocked, outraged, and felt she needed to do something. She was soon bottle feeding puppies that had been found dumped in bins, picking up strays from the street, and finding them new homes. Many didn't even go any further than Angie's home... She's a confirmed failed fosterer on more than one occasion. At the last count she has 11 ranging from quite small dogs to a Spanish Mastiff who is the gentlest dog ever.

Don't miss what Angie has done before this blog started.

Before I started this blog solely to inform people about what Angie does for rescued dogs I wrote about some of her work & her dogs & foster dogs in my other blogs on Eye on Spain.

Here are the links to them, do read them, see her own 11 dogs who are all rescued dogs who she adopted after no one else seemed to want them & she'd fallen in love with them anyway so really didn't want them to go elsewhere.

Missy's pups need homes
Sunday, March 30, 2014

Missy was pregnant in a Perrera, we dont know what her history was but she was clearly ill treated by a man and is very fearful of men...her pups were born in the kennels of the protectora that saved her.. she was then fostered with the pups by Angie Mccready, who is doing a fine job with them and now they are ready for homing.

Mum (Missy) will need some care before she is homed to help her overcome her fear, unless someone comes along who is prepared to help her and have the patience and knowledge to deal with a very nervous dog.

In the meantime if you are interested in Missy's gorgeous pups please contact adoptions@adoptaspanishdog.com or angie_mccready@hotmail.com

Winston & Cain are male, Scout, Skyler & Rosie are female.

Missy is learning to love life more
Thursday, March 27, 2014

Missy has really formed a bond with Luke. She loves play fighting with him.

From Angie: "I think it's safe to say that it's men that Missy is terrified of. She is more accepting of women that come here although she's still very wary. Poor Phil, my husband, has been totally ignoring Missy, no eye contact, but whenever he moves about she goes into panic mode.

When the puppies are out they will go to Phil but Missy stands at a great distance just watching. If he starts to walk away from the pups she runs off much like did when she first came here, belly low to the ground, elongated body, really frightened. She will lie on the sofa opposite him, but she lays watching his every move. If he gets up, she runs away.
We tried offering her some tinned meat, standing together, both hands outstretched, I was telling her the words I used when she first came here, "it's ok", but she wasnt having any of it.

It's horrible seeing her so scared of Phil, he is very patient, and agrees it's going to take a long time for her to trust him.
I'm no expert in this field, so am taking advice from a dog behaviourist to see how Phil can gain her trust. We don't want to rush anything.

This is her favourite spot now in the evenings.

Missy sleeps on my bed at night, curled up on the pillow next to me. She is still very nervous of Phil, but is now able to lie next to me when he is in the room. He is totally ignoring her, which is what we were advised to do. Today, when I let the pups out for a run round the garden, they all gathered round Phil's feet. He petted them and she watched very intently at a distance. She will learn with time that he won't hurt her.

I've had a lovely long chat with a lady who is a dog behaviourist and specializes with dogs like Missy.
It seems we are doing all the right things, however, she has suggested other things to try which of course we will put into practice.

As you have seen from the videos, Missy is particularly happy and confident with Luke, so from now on, all the work we do with Missy will include Luke, ie..feeding, playing, etc.

From now on we have to only hand feed her. She doesn't have a problem with me hand feeding but we have to now introduce Phil's hand. Also, I have to give up my sofa and sit next to Phil on his sofa. When we are sitting together we have to encourage hand feeding Missy with something she really likes. We know she is especially fond of tinned meat, so thats what we will use.. it's gonna get messy lol.

Phil now has to start talking to her .. softly, quietly, and no eye contact, preferably using the same words I used when she first arrived like "it's ok" and "good girl" so she relates those words to good things. He must not move while he is talking to her either.

It's going to be interesting putting these things into practice and we are very hopeful that one day it will all pay off and Missy will be confident enough to forget her terrible past and accept that not all men are bad"

Updates on Missy and her little runt, Toto
Friday, March 21, 2014

20/3
From Angie "Phil, my husband, took this photo this evening. This is Missy's favourite spot now in the evenings. She sleeps on my bed at night, curled up on the pillow next to me.

She is still very nervous of Phil, but is now able to lie next to me when he is in the room. He is totally ignoring her, which is what we were advised to do. Today, when I let the pups out for a run round the garden, they all gathered round Phils feet. He petted them and she watched very intently at a distance. She will learn with time that he won't hurt her and hopefully gain his trust.

She is becoming a right softy with me now although some of the other dogs are getting a bit fed up with her antics. She wants to play with them all .. some are more tolerant than others, but she gets so excited and rough she goes over the top and boxes with her front paws. Both Billy and Charlie, my larger dogs, have put her in her place, but she forgets lol."

Today......... From Angie "Here is just a taster of what we have to go through with Missy every morning. lol. It gets madder than this but she darts about that quick I can barely keep her on the camera."

Below: Tonic and Toto, Pointer love. Toto's doing so well. He's Missy's little runt, remember?

Tonic was rescued then re-homed but it didn't work out so he is currently with Jacky who's fostering tiny Toto.

If you use Facebook you can see videos of Toto, check out the posts by Jacky Hazeleger on Missy's Journey.

Libby & her brother, Luke, you cannot help but love this pair
Wednesday, March 19, 2014

I first wrote about Libby & Luke in here, (the 'Spanish animals that need help' blog) before I started this blog solely for Angie's work.

Please do read it .. (just click on the blue text that says 'here' above) .. as it'd take ages to rewrite it all with the many photographs I added there.

Unbelievably this wonderful pair are still with Angie. They are inseparable ..brother & sister .. but need a home or homes.

They are now around 6 months old. Both have been spayed/castrated. They are vaccinated plus have passports, all ready for a new life. Libby has been diagnosed with Leish but it can be controlled by daily tablet cheaply.

If you are looking for a special pair of dogs .. although Libby and Luke can be homed separately ..  they would make an ideal pair for a home with space for 2.

These 2 cross Galgo GSD's have lovely natures, are highly intelligent and are super sweet dogs. They were rescued last summer and deserve a home of their own just like their siblings now have.

Missy & pups update 17/3
Tuesday, March 18, 2014

16/3

Pickle's always drinking Angie's drinks, he's a really naughty little dog for doing this, at any chance!

He did it again!

Treat time

17/3

From Angie:
"Missy is continuing to do really well. She is so much more relaxed now apart from first thing in the morning when she's so excited and becomes a raving lunatic, but during the day she's spending a lot of time curled up beside me on the sofa.
I'm working a little bit on recall with her, and she is responding now she's recognizing her name.

One of the pups is concerning me just a little bit with her weight. She seems thinner than the rest of them although she is eating and pooing ok. They have all been wormed 3 times now so not sure whats going on..if anything. She is active and plays, just looks too thin. I will let the vet take a look if there's no weight gain in a day or two.

Missy is also accepting other people that come round without fear. As long as they ignore her, she is OK."

Missy playing with her family.

Missy's little runt, Toto, is doing really well. If you use Facebook look at Jacky Hazeleger's posts & videos about him on Missy's Journey group https://www.facebook.com/groups/490980701014097/?ref=ts&fref=ts These videos are not on Youtube.

Jacky says "he is much more like a dog now, thinks he is big (but is actually still tiny), terrorizes all other dogs and his foster brothers! His skin condition seems to be improving now that his immunity is getting better, and he eats like a horse"

March 15th update
Saturday, March 15, 2014

14th March
From Angie "This morning I took the puppies down to the vets for their first vaccinations.I put the pups in the car and Missy freaked out BIG time. She ran around the garden body low to the ground and very elongated. She was really scared.

In the past the vet has come here to my house. The first time was to check the pups over because of the problem with their eyes. She was so afraid I had to lift the pups out 2 at a time and keep the vet hidden round the corner.

The last time he came to take her bloods I already had her sedated, so no problem. So today, I thought it wouldn't be a problem to take the puppies to the vet myself..wrong.. she looked just like she did when she first arrived.

When I got back, she was still freaking. Phil said she had been like it since I left. I put the pups back in the pen, and it took Missy quite a while to go back to them..she wouldnt come anywhere near me either.

It's taken maybe an hour and a half for things to get back to normal.

The vet's bill is sitting at around 200 euros at the moment. This is for lots of bottles of eye drops (I've lost count how many) 2 lots of worming, blood tests, Flagyl syrup and pills for diahhrea, Septrin for blood in puppies poo, Syrup to help dry up Missy's milk as she has a gash on one of her teats caused probably from a tooth or claw and 2 vet house calls. Phew, think that's everything."

Below: Well, after a very skittish day, Missy finally settled in her favorite spot.

15/3
Below: After yesterday's freaky moments, and being really unhinged all day, Missy seems to have forgotten her bad moments and is back to being a happy girl this morning.

Below: Missy & Luke definitely have a "thing" going on!

Below: Nelson has been picked up today & has settled into his new home.

Nelson is now called Rufo & has a new friend, his new owner's little nephew.

This is where Missy's story began
Friday, March 14, 2014

On January 24th Missy, the gentlest but most scared pointer ever, had seven puppies, 4 males & 3 females. From what I know she was picked up & taken to a shelter where she gave birth to her 7 puppies in safety.

This is where Missy's story REALLY began. Angie McCready saw her story & when the shelter said they'd sponsor the food Angie was able to take them all in. They were then transported from the Cartegena area of Murcia to the Alicante area to Angie. The runt of the litter is doing very well with another foster carer, leaving Angie with Missy & 6 puppies now 7 weeks old & thriving as can be seen in the latest video which is after the photos.

And here they are NOW.

Thank You! From Animals Across Spain for Buying This Book

Before you join Casa McCready’s Mad House we’d like to thank you for helping animal welfare in Spain. One hundred percent of royalties from this book will be donated to ACTIN (Animal Care Treatment International Network Spain.)

ACTIN is not an animal rescue group it is an organisation focused on trying to make changes in the laws against cruelty, neglect and abandonment of animals in Spain. It aims to find the best ways to introduce education of the general care and welfare of all animals in Spain.

Very recently ACTIN has been working on addressing issues with a dog pound where dogs have been kept in awful conditions and their lives exploited for money by a company that produces fertilizers and hygiene items.  They have rescued over 40 dogs from this pound and a currently looking at legal action against the people responsible.  Your donation through this book will be helping to ensure that pounds such as this become a thing of the past in Spain.

If you are interested in ACTIN’s work please visit their website. http://www.actin-spain.com. For a small monthly subscription you can become a member of ACTIN and get involved in improving the welfare of animals in Spain.

Of course it is impossible for ACTIN to achieve its aims without saving dogs they find that are in dire need of help. If you are looking for to own a dog why not consider one of the dogs ACTIN has saved. They can be adopted throughout Europe, many happy ACTIN dogs are now living in countries outside of Spain and there are a number in foster care waiting for their forever home and happy ending.  Email: admin@actin-spain.com

An emotional day
Friday, March 7, 2014

From Angie

4th March:

"I sat in the doorway to prevent Missy from stealing the puppies food. I called her a few times, and eventually she came right up to me and let me give her a real good fuss.

She is coming along but still so nervous and jumpy.. she even jumps out of her skin if one of her pups barks or yelps!"

5th March:

"Pups are all doing really well, and I'm now looking for fosterers for them or even adopters. They are weaned, and although they still suckle given half the chance, Missy lets them, but not for long."

Today, 7th March: Angie has been hoping to try to encourage Missy out of her pen, she didn't want to rush her & undo all the hard work so far but she thought maybe Missy might like to venture out. As Angie has 13 other dogs on her premises she was understandably concerned but seems she needn't have been, watch the videos.

The first video was when Angie only let an elderly dog, Megan, outside when she let Missy out. How well did THAT go?

Then Angie let some of her other dogs out, seems Missy is really at home with dogs!

So wonderful to watch!

THEN... Missy decided she wanted to go INDOORS with the others!

What giants steps Missy has taken today! She's been out of the pen now for a good couple of hours and not interested in going back in..actually tried to play with a tennis ball...and now this...

And it didn't take Missy long to figure out how comfy a sofa is! Missy slept here for about 20 minutes, then some friends of Angie's arrived and Missy charged round the garden in a blind panic. Angie put her back in the pen where she felt safe.

More about Missy (and Toto)
Tuesday, March 4, 2014

Getting stuck in!
Notice how Missy picks out the tuna first, she's getting to be quite a fussy madam!

Time out in the sunshine
Angie is now able to sit 2-3 feet from Missy & Missy's ok with that though everything has to be done in slow motion & with quiet reassuring words. She seemed relaxed enough whilst Angie sat near her as she soaked up some sunshine.

Below: Toto this morning. He's doing really well.

Missy this morning, so excited about her breakfast
Tuesday, March 4, 2014

From Angie

"Missy this morning was getting all excited about her breakfast. This is the first time she has jumped up the pen like this. There's definite tail wags today. The video's a bit short but it takes an age to upload, and at the time I was laden with 2 trays of doggy breakfasts in one hand, dogs jumping up me to try and get a bit, and the wind nearly blowing me over, but I think you can see ... she is getting better."

More news about Missy & her puppies
Monday, March 3, 2014

From Angie

"I've been to the vets with the 3 pups with bad eyes. Good news is, the vet now doesn't think they are blind, but their vision is impaired. The reflexes are there, albeit poor.

Nelson's left eye isn't open properly, but this is due to his eyelashes are turned inwards so probably sore for him to open it. I've got to continue with the drops every 4 hours, and gently stretch Nelson's eye open each time.

The vet will assess them again on 12th March when he comes to give them all their first vaccination. Also on the same day, we are going to give Missy a small sedative and try to get a blood sample to check for leish, and give her the first vaccine.

Good news as well that Rosie's ulcer has cleared up.

I took Missy some tuna and fed her on her sunbed. She allowed me to stroke and pet her chest even after I had no more food to offer. She even looked relaxed for a couple of minutes!"

Missy's pup, Toto, is doing well. He eats, has gained weight (760 grams now) and loves to follow Jacky, his foster carer around in the house. She has to be careful though...as he is so small. He still sleeps with his foster brothers Atilla and Angèl, the Galgo pups that came from Angie at the same time as Toto did. They have both opened their eyes today.

Missy is wary of anyone but Angie
Sunday, March 2, 2014

From Angie ...

"Missy is a bit wary today. My friend, Clare Roberts, came over to see us and came into the pen with me. Missy is wary of anybody and everybody, plus it's still really windy here and things are still banging and making her jump.
She wouldn't come out of her bed whilst Clare was here, just kept her head low in the blanket. After about half an hour she did stand up to feed her babies, but that's as good as it got.

She has to get used to other people other than myself, but I dont want to push her. Claire was really good, sat on the sunbed in the pen, no eye contact, but Missy wouldn't leave the safety of her bed.

I'm now pretty certain that one of the blonde females is blind in both eyes. I will take the ones I'm concerned about to the vets for another check up tomorrow. Where am I going to find homes for these blind puppies??"

Missy will come to me now
Saturday, March 1, 2014

From Angie

"All puppies have been wormed as has Missy, although it took me ages to get her to take her tablet. She kept spitting it out despite my efforts to hide it in the dog meat. Same with her pill for the trots, but we got there in the end.

I'm still putting drops in the eyes of the pups with the infection. Nelson's dont look any better, but I think there's a slight improvement with the others.

Missy was very skittish this morning, not sure why, unless it was because we had a hellish windy night and all sorts of things were flying about .. really dont know. It might have been because I made her stay out of the puppy pen whilst they ate as she does tend to get stuck in herself depriving them of their grub. I didn't close the door or anything .. just stood in the doorway, and she's still too scared to go past me. She is definitely hiding her fears behind the pups, but as the majority have suggested it's best to keep them with her for another week or two then thats what we will do.

LATER TODAY.. Are you all ready for this? I must say I'm just a bit gob smacked and really pleased I had the camera with me. We have made some big steps forward today. Missy will come to me now when I'm standing outside of the pen...food is the key..but nevertheless it's progress. And she likes pork scratchings too lol."

Angie has taken another two truly wonderful videos showing how well Missy is coming on. Her pups are growing fast too.
