Hi all,

Wanted to make you aware of something we had happen at Bolnuevo yesterday. We parked in our usual spot in the big car park near the sand sculptures and, as we were unloading for the beach, a guy wandered over to us. He couldn't speak English but with our little Spanish we worked out he was asking for 1 Euro to park there. We have visited that car park many, many times and never been charged. There are no signs, etc so I challenged him. Did he have any Id ? Would he give us a ticket for the fee, etc? He then backed off and said ok, no problem and walked off. We watched from the beach as he tried the same with other cars. He didn't seem to bother if the occupants looked like locals so this made us more sure he was just trying it on. A Euro to park all day is good anywhere but the principle of being ripped off really annoyed me - especially as there were other guys working hard and legally clearing rubbish from the beach, etc. Wonder what they thought?

We have had this in Cartagena, we just ignored and carried on.  Seems like they just try and pull a fast one to get a few Euro.

Cheeky devils. But remember, Spain, like many other European countries is in financial difficulty at the moment and when times get tough, people will try anything to get a few quid.

Just be glad they didn't hold out a knife and ask you for your wallet!

We've had this happen on  a few times by the market  down the port ,  they guide you into a free parking space and expect a small reward, we usally give them 50 cents or something, you don't have to give them anything, they're just trying to be inventive and  get themselves a few euro,  i think its better than  just sitting next to a cashpoint or outside a supermarket with a piece of  cardboard

This reminded me to mention something that happened to my sister whilst on holiday. A couple of (apparently campaigning) people approach your dining table asking you to sign/look at a piece of paper/letter they are waving about. They put the sheet onto the table in front of you and very deftly 'relieve' you of the mobile phone/wallet or whatever they laid it upon. My niece had her new iPhone stolen and it wasn't even noticed until some time after the thieves had strolled off!! It was her birthday present that she'd only had for a couple of weeks. Rotten pigs.

Reminds me of the article I read in a broadsheet some years ago, when the attendant at Bristol Zoo finally retired and wasn't replaced. The Zoo contacted the council to ask why the car park attendant wasn't replaced................... the council replied he didn't work for us we thought he was employed by you.

This guy had been collecting money at the Bristol zoo car park for over twenty five years, self employed (obviously) taking money for parking, shouldn't have been there. I'm sure the article worked out that he took money everyday 365 days per year for over 25 years, earned over £2.5 million. I wish the guy well as he deserved it, apparently he hardly ever took a day off for sickness or holidays.

Not an urban myth as we had the same in Bolnuevo last week. Unfortunately for him I'd spotted him when we arrived and assumed he was begging, (thank god for not being completely multi-lingual), so when he approached I told him I wasn't interested and carried on walking!

Snap!

Beau Brummies That happened to me in the town of Mazarron last Thursday.  trying to park up some guy came behind the car to guide me in!!

Then when I got out he showed me a hand full of change in his palm pointing at it!  (I nearly took it and said thank you very much!)

The thing that got me was I returned to the car about 3/4hr later and he was still there!!  Came straight up to me and started again!!

Jackie (Scapa). You'd probably been on the "Vino blanco" all day and he thought you needed it more than him hahaha.

Best  true one to happen to me. Finished nights and myself and 17 (out of 8500 workers its not a lot) others played our local muni course. As it was very early no one at the clubhouse. We played and the girl caught up with us after about an hour. Thats £12 each she said to our group, but I have no change so I'll just charge £10. She duly gave each of us a receipt. Finished the 18th about to walk back to our cars when the clubhouse manager came running out. As we explained......   "What girl"  he said. We just fell about laughing...and yes we had to pay again.
