SPAIN LOWERS MOTORWAY SPEED LIMIT

 Spain will lower its national speed limit, reduce the cost of rail fares by 5% and raise the minimum percentage of biofuels blended into gasoline, all in a bid to reduce oil dependence in the face of spiking crude prices, the country’s deputy prime minister said on Friday.

The maximum speed limit on Spanish motorways is 120kph (75mph) and this will be reduced to 110kph (68mph). The government will rush to print new signs to alert people of the change. 

"We are going to go a bit slower and in exchange for that we are going to consume less gasoline and therefore pay less money," Pérez Rubalcaba said.

For instance, he said, a car running on petrol will use 15% less fuel at the new, lower speed limit.

Regarding the lowering of the Spanish motorway limit - really that is a hoot.  The 3319 from San Javier to Murcia has a 100 kmh limit - but we are nearly knocked off the road  by the jet stream caused by cars probably doing 200kmh plus (OK that is a slight exaggeration but you get the picture - so what chance have they got of taming those "Spanish" drivers on the motorways!

As SandraB says, it should be a hoot. We use the AP7 to get to Roda from Almoradi and even with our cruise control clicked on 120 kph there are lots of low flying BMWs and Audis.

Whilst we might save money on fuel just how much is the cost of printing the new signs ?

The AP7 was changed to 110km yesterday , the new signs were being put up near Los Alcazares. Look out for those police cameras I am sure they will cash in over the next few weeks.
