Hope someone can help me here before hubby sees the credit card statement

Hired car through doyouspain and picked this up at Murcia Airport from Sol Mar.  When picking up family later on I bumped of the bollard beside the unit for paying for parking - no one else involved and I take full blame.  Phoned solmar but they did not seem too concerned and told me to tell the person when I left back the car.

Went on my merry way, left car back week later - I did check website of doyouspain, and it says that they provide fully comp insurance and no excess on the car I had hired.  Now find out today that solmar have taken out 500.00 from my credit card!

If I had fully comp no excess insurance then surely I should be covered for the bump.  Have emailed do you spain so awaiting a reply - does anyone have any experience of this

Viv

Hi Viv,

Ouch... did you go to the same driving school as me wife? ;)

It sounds lke you've been charged a fixed excess in which case you've got a strong case for refund as the conditions page on the doyouspain.com wensite clearly states there's no excess.

http://www.doyouspain.com/conditions.htm

I'd get on to DoYouSpain right away and take it up with them.

Good luck.

George.

Thanks George, have just emailed do you spain.

Me hubby will have field day with this  When we went back to the airport had a good look at the offending bollard thingy and by the looks of it loads of people have bumped into it - covered in various different colours of paint!  Thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!!!

hi Ken & Maria

Will give them call tomorrow if I dont hear back from them.  Have booked car  hire for July and August with them but if they dont honour the fully comprehensive insurance and no excess deal then will probably try somewhere else.

Ok, they are very competitive but if they are not going to honour the agreement then would rather pay little more to get peace of mind.

Hubby says, if you think car is bad, should see state of bollard

Unfortunately you are in the situation that no doubt many have found themselves in previously.

My understanding is that this is standard policy for the budget spanish car hire companies

Basically if you have a bump they take the money for repair from you until they are compensated by the insurance company.

Problem is how and when do you know that they have been compensated?

Once they have your money do they care? probably not.

I suspect you will have to chase this hard through the broker to get anywhere.

One suggestion is to call you credit card company if you get no joy from the hire people. Since a ruling in 2008 you have the same protection overseas as you do in the Uk with respect to goods and services purchased on a credit card. "They are jointly and severally liable. "

In other words your disput is with the card company as well as, or instead of the hire company.

Have done this myself, in a different situation in Spain and the card company resolved it.

If you want more details PM me.

Good luck in getting this resolved.
