Dear Readers,

Firstly, our sincere apologies for the lack of a January edition of the Newsletter but unfortunately one of us was struck down by the flu and the other went AWOL in the UK for nigh on three weeks. Anyway, we are both back on form now and ready to go.

Secondly, just a reminder that we do need your input in order to keep the Newsletter running, so please let us have your recommendations, advice, news etc.

Sonya & Jane

UPDATES

NEWSLETTER
Paper copies are available from Sonya M16/71, Jane M15/44 and Sierra Golf Legal Services.

NOTE: Sierra Golf Legal Services have now moved to M16/27. They are open Monday to Friday from 10.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.

We will not be including a copy of “Services Available on Sierra Golf” with each issue but if anyone wants a copy of this please contact Sonya.

BOOKCLUB
February’s book club was well attended. Held by Judy Findley, we gave feedback about the books that had been read. It was also an opportunity to get to know each other and discuss what was happening locally and back in England

 NEW TO SIERRA GOLF

LAKE VIEW BAR
Alan and Marion are looking forward to opening the doors to their new bar/café
within the next few weeks. Work is currently well underway.

Lake View Bar is situated on the Golf Course adjacent to the Golf Clubhouse and, as the name suggests, boasts
beautiful views across the golf course and lake. There is a kitchen, bar and small seating area inside and a decked area outside where you can sit and enjoy the surroundings. The bar will serve beers, wines, spirits etc. and Marion, who is a professional chef, will also be serving traditional English fare, breakfasts, burgers, fish and chips, Mediterranean food and a special menu del dia.

They are hoping to show Sky sports matches and hold a variety of social events.

We wish Alan and Marion every success in their new venture.

BABYSITTING
Hollie Wild is now offering a babysitting service. Hollie trained as an NHS carer for four years and is reliable and responsible. References available. She can be contacted by telephone 65416227 or call in at M14/07.

HAIR & BEAUTY
There is now a mobile hairdressing and beauty service visiting SG. For information or to make an appointment tel. 966191581/627063286 or

WINDOW CLEANING
A window cleaning service is now being provided by Gavin and Nick of GNC Service. They also install water filters and smoke alarms. They can be contacted by telephone 966191581/
608046104 or

THINGS ARE MOVING
You will no doubt be delighted to hear that, over the past couple of weeks, there has been an unprecedented amount of activity going on around the site.

The bar/café by the communal swimming pool has been painted throughout, the railings and gates have been painted, the toilet facilities are in place and the electrics are in the process of being installed.

The bar by Sol pools is nearing completion and is due to be opening VERY shortly. They are apparently just waiting for connection to mains electric.

Electrical work is being carried out at the supermarket.

The trees are all being pruned, the squares around them cleared and gravelled and the open areas tidied
.

BLOCKED DRAINS
Dyna Drain comes highly recommended for clearing blocked drains. They use CCTV inspection and high pressure jetting. Charges are very reasonable and they provide a 24 hour emergency service. They also carry out pipe repair/replacement and swimming pool/leak repairs.

BABY IT’S COLD INSIDE
Apparently it has been the coldest winter here for a long time and, as Spanish houses are built to stay cool during the long hot summers, on many days it has in fact been warmer outside than it has indoors. To solve this problem several readers have recommended “Econo-Heat” wall mounted electric panel heaters. They are apparently not expensive to run, being only low wattage, and are extremely effective as a background heat to take the chill off.

Hopefully warmer days are coming soon and perhaps next winter will not be as cold but just in case, we thought we would pass this information on so that you can be prepared.

FLU
Several residents on Sierra Golf have experienced flu since New Year. Most people have had to resort to antibiotics for chest problems and the illness has had a duration of 14-21 days. We hope everyone that has had flu is now recovered or on the way to recovery.

SECURITY
A reader has brought to our attention that it may not be a good idea to include your poligono and house number when posting a notice on the public site on Eye on Spain especially if you are letting people know when you are coming out. The reason behind this being anyone of not so reputable character could read the posting and ascertain when the property was unoccupied. Just a thought.

CASA NAMES
A reader has mentioned that they have noticed quite a few people have given their houses a name and that it would be interesting to find out what the names mean and why they were chosen. Perhaps, just for a bit of fun, if you have named your house you could let us know and we could do an article on this.

To start the ball rolling, “ Casa Primavera” was so named because primavera is Spanish for spring, which is the owners’ surname
.

ICELAND
Good news for all English frozen food addicts. Iceland is opening a new store in St. Javier soon, on the main road next to the large DIA supermarket. At the moment the nearest Iceland store is in Torrevieja
.

 FRIDAY FROLIC 30th JANUARY

12 competitors for this weeks Frolic

.
Joint runners-up were Phil (Bandit) Wild and Dave Higgins (Higgy)

Winning nearest to the pin on the 3rd hole was Phil Wild.

Winning the longest drive was Rick Shropshall.

Please note: As from 6th February the winner of the Stapleford will get one point taken off his handicap for 3 weeks.
Handicaps will be adjusted after 3 weeks.

FRIDAY FROLIC 6th FEBRUARY

Eleven turned out for this weeks Frolic including two guests.

The weather reflected the scores that came in (very windy) the highest score being 13.

Three golfers came in with a high score of 13 points, so under the new rules they each get one point deducted from their handicap for three weeks. As one of these was a guest it means that two SGS members each have a point deducted:

Tony Brown and Ron Mulligan

Nearest to the pin on the 3rd hole was Eric Findley.

Thank you to all who turn out for the Friday Frolics. Don’t forget to put your names down for The Yorkshire Mill Shop Trophy on the 8th May; it should be a great day.

 FRIDAY FROLIC 13th FEBRUARY

We had 10 turn out this weeks Frolic.

Winning the Stapleford was Don Love coming in with 18 points
.
Runner-up coming in with 15 points was Bobby Hallam.

Winning nearest to the pin on the 3rd hole was Bobby Hallam, yes you got it, an up and coming Bandit.

It looks like we will have to get the Daddy of all Bandits out of retirement to stop all these up and coming Bandits so “clean them balls and get the driver in action Mr. B. Spring, you’ve got to be in it to win it”.

Thank you Sonya and Jane.  I've missed the newsletter and it's really good to hear all the news and get info on services.  Glad everyone's recovered from that flu - we've had it here too, it's very nasty.  Best wishes.
