For anyone who is interested work has started on the new airport. Earth moving and concreting has commenced and the shape of the runway is now visible.

20,000 construction workers will be required and 13000 airport jobs created. Initially there will be 15000 flights a year using 5 gates - this could rise to 9 depending on demand.

All

I was out mid August, and decided to take a drive out to Corvera from Condado to check progress myself..   I eventually found the proposed site (which was only signposted by a couple of handwritten signs attached to lamposts) and there wasn't much happening at all - all I saw was a few dusty fields and 3 or 4 chaps out surveying..  That said, it was the middle of AUgust ( so I assume that the majority of builders would be on holiday).

Timescales for opening the airport had orginally been quoted as mid 2009, but then it moved to 2010.  From what I saw, they'd really need to go some to get it ready for next year,  but I guess it is possible - just look at what they've done on Condado in 18 months.   If they focused on gettin the runway complete then there's always the option of using poratcabin type buildings for the terminal (like those being used for Coventry) to get it operational and then add the permanent buildings later.

The drive from Condado to the site was 40 mins - but it's basically a glorified farm track all the way.   I'd assume that they will link the site with the main motorways as part of the work - so I'd expect it would reduce the time down to 20 or 30 mins.

I was going to  take some photos but  there wasn't a lot to see - I didn't think a couple fo dusty fields would be of much interest!

Read earlier in the year that there is supposed to be 3 access roads to the airport, 2 heading northwards & one to the south.  Southern access will be from the MU-601 from Fuente Álamo to Valladolises. (Approx 18 miles)
