Can anybody advise me whether there is any reasonable way that a plot of land that is one parcela can be split so that one part of it can be sold?
I am told this is not possible, but have difficulty accepting that.

Of course you can split it. Through a legal procedure called " segregación" whose premises varies depending of the character ( rural or urban) of the plot.
