Muy buenos días amablas amigos en España! ¿Qué tiempo hac esta dias?

Hopefully I have said that correctly.  I apologise for my lack of Spanish skills. Lo siento, no hablo Español.  I am, however, keen to learn.

My name is Joe, I am 26 and currently live in England.  In June 2014 I visited beautiful Gibraltar for a week and had an amazing time on the Rock. I fell in love with Gib, and am seriously looking into moving to the Rock, perhaps in 12 months time, to live and work in the area.

There are a couple of questions I would like some help with:

  1. I appreciate that most employers in Gibraltar will prefer to employ people from the region, rather than those travelling overseas. I have a background in administration and public sector work.  Is there anything I can do to try and improve my chances of finding administrative or reception work in Gibraltar?
  2. Is it likely that companies would be willing to interview over the phone or Skype?  I earn £8000 a year, and it is difficult to afford flights.
  3. What is La Linea like as a place to live?  I notice most of the houses have bars on the windows; is this common in Spain or specific to La Linea?

Thank you kindly for your help!  Muchas gracias!

Hi Joe,

I presume that you are a part time worker, as £8,000 p/a would be well below the minimum wage for say 36 hours.

Try Recruit Gibratar.com. Sadly I've never encountered a good report on La Linea.

I wish you good fortune in your search.

yes

I've been to Gibraltar many times and love it there. However, we always stay in a hotel in La Linea and I have to say that it's really not a nice town and I wouldn't like to live there.

Bars are common throughout Spain on all windows that are easily accessible, even on expensive houses in nice areas.

Don't forget, if you're going to Gibraltar, you need to learn Spanglish as it's commonly spoken there.

Hello - i think the bars on windows is a southern thing in Spain (I'm counting the Costa Blanca here too). I've been in villages in the north where people even leave their doors open when they're out - no doubt they rely on neighbours to keep an eye out? Don't remember seeing bars on windows in the cities either, although common for shops to have those ugly shutters that attract graffiti...

Thank you very much for your replies.  Yes, I currently work part time.  I aim to get full time work soon and start saving some money up.  Any tips on where I can learn Spanglish?
