I would say, rent for a while, before buying, make sure you have enough money in the bank (maybe not in the bank actually after recent events in Cyprus) to see you through for at least a year, and learn as much Spanish as you can before coming. It also depends on where in Spain you want to live, what you want to do when you get here, and lots of other variables, so more info please..

yeah i am wrong

you need 100k in cash

forget the thiving banks and you need to be especially careful with spanish banks as spain is destroyed with a mass exodus of people leaving for countrys like germany and the uk

Not easy to offer advice without knowing what you are running from and what you think you are running to?

If you are running to help, there are many in Spain that need some right now.

Good luck.

Regards

Norman

"normansand said"

"Not easy to offer advice without knowing what you are running from and what you think you are running to?"

I dont think this poster is "running from anything" Normansand.

If I was you Brysons I would just dig into all the posts about Spain as these questions and answers have been covered before

I am afraid I have no mindreading ability myself and have never met anyone who has, but there again thinking is not knowing merely speculating.

As to old posts.........much has changed!!!

However to speculate,  if sun is the attraction a word of warning.

I can vouch for the fact that the fair skin does not take it too well, I have just had painful treatment to the head and face from too much outdoor activity in the SE UK  excuse for a sunny climate.

Regards

Norman

Thank you both,

the wife thinks the treatment has gone well but the Dermos' warn that I should wear protection every day including the non-sunny days.

My sister in Aus' also has to take care.

Whether it is just age or our new thin ozone layer we have created.......who knows?????

Regards

Norman

Well you make sure you wear that protective clothing Norman do as you are told.

That will make a change for you (just joking) but please do as they say.

As i've said many times before get info from the "horses mouth"

As others have said ensure you have plenty of money and a  plan B.

Are there facilities  where you plan to live for pursuing hobbies, out of school activities/

Do lots of research on where you plan to live. Will you have to work?

Consider disruptive effect on your son's education? private school may be better.

DWP IN UK-info on health, child allowance

HMRC IN UK-info on your tax situation  and paying tax on your income from the UK in Spain

Look at sites online-UK in Spain, Anglo info-just google you will get hundreds.

Lots of info on EOS-just search a subject- for experiences and opinions, rather than accurate info

Expect lots of conflicting advice

Expect winter to be colder than you imagine

Don't expect regulation or logic when dealing with affairs, or to get things done quickly.

Don't  wear rose coloured glasses ; don't expect things to be cheaper, easier  or less stressful.

Yes it is not easy to smarm factor 15 on yourself when its raining outside, you feel such a cissy.

age decline is by no means pleasant.

No they say getting older does not come alone, very true. It is not normally a man thing to

keep putting creme on themselves, but you make sure you do it.

Sorry for taking this of thread but had to wish Norman good Luck

Patricia

I agree with Norman, that we are often running away from something when we up sticks and go to live in a foreign country.  I speak from experience; I thought the grass would be greener and nothing could have stopped me from trying, but sheer will-power isn't necessarily enough.  The only problem is that you take yourself with you and so any dissatisfactions you may have in your life can just be transported to the new place; in my case I was very stressed out with young children when we moved to Spain; how I thought that was going to improve by moving away from my support networks, I don't know. Although I did have other reasons for moving, too complicated to go into.  Sometimes, there is just an inexplicable drive or impulse that you can't define.

To make a success of it in Spain, though, as many people say they have done, I believe you need to be very robust as the challenges come thick and fast, depending on how much you do.  Maybe if you just rent somewhere, making sure it's warm enough in the winter and not too boiling in the summer, and you don't buy a house or a car or anything big too early on, and avoid as many complications as you can, it might work out.  Although, having said that, many people have had relatively trouble-free house and car purchases, so it's not all black-and-white.  I do think you should keep somewhere in the UK to run back to if necessary.  The tax thing is also very tricky, depending on how well off you are.  But as people have said, there is a wealth of information on this, on various other threads here.  Anyway, all the best, as I suspect that like me, nothing will put you off your chosen path!  And it could be the best thing you've ever done.
