Hi All

We are at Roda for 11 days at Xmas. Any thoughts/recommendations for purchasing Xmas goodies/markets etc and recommended car hire? Best quote I found was on eyeonspain site.

Hi Bunty

We spent 9 days in Roda last Christmas and although it was very quiet the weather was lovely during the day and cold in the evenings. With the clubhouse now open I am sure it will be a lot busier and there will be more atmosphere this year. My wife tells me that she didn't find any Christmas markets but that there are great markets at Easter when the whole town of Los Alcazares is taken over by Medieval Markets although I know that that won't help you at Christmas. She was able to get Christmas Crackers in the small english supermarket beside Las Claras community centre, M&S Supermarket and other traditional english bits and pieces such as mince pies etc which the Spanish don't have. There is a really good local bakery near the Town Hall and one beside the Tuesday market where we got some great desserts and a Christmas cake with a difference ie chocolate mousse inside. Other than that El Corte Ingles in Cartagena is one of the best places we found for Christmas shopping, as they wrap everything for you and there are street markets all during Christmas in Cartagena along the busier streets where there are cabins with things like jewellery, scarves, handbags and things which my grandaughters loved. There was also an outdoor ice rink in Cartagena for Christmas and beyond. Hope this is of some help

Don

Sorry Bunty about the carhire, we are in Roda a lot and use www.arguscarhire.com and I have a quote from them for 110 euro for a vauxhall meriva or similar for eleven days from 23 December to 3 January. I have my own excess insurance policy as I rent thirty or forty times a year so that keeps the quote low. Usually we get the car from one of the agents in vans outside the airport.

Hi,

Try the following sites for the best car hire rates.

Also for zero excess insurance have a look at  www.worldwideinsure.com  they offer zero excess insurance from 1.90 GBP per day. I was recently charged 850 euros for a tiny scratch on a hire car, luckily I had taken out zero excess insurance (which cost me 9.50 GBP for 5 days) so I got all this back. Hertz etc. charge over 10 GBP per day!!

For best car hire rates, compare prices at the sites below:

Travelsupermarket – COMPARES 25 SUPPLIERS:

Travelsupermarket

CarHireMarket – COMPARES 35 SUPPLIERS:

Car Hire Market

Auto Europe – GUARANTEED BEST PRICE. Also No cancellation or amendment fees (if made 48+ hours before rental). So book with Auto Europe & use the price guarantee (if needed) to match lower price from above sites, go to.....

Hi

In response to the enquiry about Christmas markets, the local paper has one listed for Cartagena and also one for Murcia.  The one in Cartagena is located in the Alameda de San Anton and runs from 6th December to 6th January.  According to the info in the paper there will be 30 stalls with a mix of traditional arts, crafts, local produce, handicrafts and giftware.  Unfortunately the opening hours are not listed.

The one in Murcia runs from 10th December to 5th January from 11am to 2pm and 5pm to 10pm and is situated in Paseo Alfonso X El Sabio and will have 66 different types of craft and produce on display.

Unfortunately I don’t know where either venue is but no doubt the local tourist office in Los Alcazares will be able to help with directions.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Dennis
