Planning on moving out there in near future, and looking for business or employment.

Have noticed from our time/s in the area, that CCTV seems minimal in comparison to the UK, and 'Home Security' consists of security grills and front doors like Bank Vaults !

In view of the fact that property, whether vacation apartment or permanent residence is such a major investment, seems surprising that investors / property owners don''t use modern technology to keep an eye on monitoring their assets.

If 'permanently on' broadband', or reliable fixed landline / cell network available at reasonable cost, then can provide CCTV / Security, and the possibility of monitoring property utilities as complete 'Asset Management Service'.

This would also apply to 'mobile assets' such as yachts in Marinas etc, where physical security is on a par with a 10 yr old Ford Mondeo !

Any comments / thoughts, greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Visioneer (Jim)

Hi Jim, welcome to EOS.

However, newly acquired off plans don't have the luxury of phonelines etc (often for years) & it's these properties which are at risk, certainly initially. New urbs are notorious at being attacked & ours was no different. Certainly on our urb (we completed April 2005) we can now use internet which was sold with sat phones often unreliable (0845 numbers). They have reported that sometimes they can't hear the caller although seems the caller can hear them. We've never looked into this but friends had it & their phones cut off if too many others use internet nearby etc.  They have also reported that they can't hear the caller although seems the caller can hear them. Recently same friends managed to get onto Telefonica who have messed them about.

These friends completed July 2005, see how long it's taken to get this far. Somehow I cannot see CCTV, however brilliant a service, being a viable option to many.

We are currently far more concerned that we haven't got English TV because of the Telmicro scandal. Odd priorities, yes, but there you are.

Regret can't help with the TV, but know the problem ! Service was terminated at the apartment we've just rented for exactly that.

Would never recommend SatPhone option as notoriously unreliable and expensive. Really only an option if no conventional cell coverage.

Luckily, when using Cellphone networks for this sort of application, signal doesn't have to be as good as when being used for voice calls.  If Sim card 'data enabled' it will generally support data transmission in areas where you can't get decent 'voice' contact, although it may take some time to complete a transmission. (Similar principle in text messaging, you can generally get a text out when you can't make a voice call. )

This is the same sort of system I'm selling to Local Authorities here in the UK, for monitoring 'FlyTipping' in remote areas, ASBO's, etc. , but it does depend on reliable cell networks, and a service provider that can support mobile data.

I'm sort of surprised that no local company out there seems to offer this sort of equipment as it's well within the capability of any decent electrician to install it, with support / backup from local IT company & cellphone provider.

Would be happy to discuss possibilities with any local companies that may be interested.

Cheers,

Jim
