We had a great game of golf on the new Roda Course.  It is very busy and there are lots of societies already visiting.  The club have a computer list of all owners so it is easy to get the reduced green fee.  However, there is a lot of confusion over the handicap system.  We are members in the UK and took handicap certificates because we understood that a minimum handicap system was in place.  Other golf courses in Spain except these certificates as proof of standard and update their computers accordingly. Infact Roda did not ask us for this and at the moment it seems they are letting all standards play.  That is fine to start with but they charged us 3 euros each for insurance because we do not have a Spanish handicap certificate.  When we asked about obtaining one and getting our handicaps put on the system so we do not have to keep remembering to bring an up to date cert they told us that they were NOT going to except UK handicap certificates!!  They told us that we have to make an appointment with the pro (presumably at a cost) who has to verify the handicap before they will recognise it!  All a bit strange and I wondered if anyone else has played the course yet or had experience of how the handicap system is going to work.

I have bought on phase 4 and i was just wondering if you dont have a handicap will you be allowed out on the course .I play in societies so i dont have an offical handicap but one of the reasons i bought was to play some golf. How far in advance did you have to book your tee time slot.

I am not really sure how far in advance you need to book tee times.  We booked a couple of weeks beforehand and it was fine but the course certainly was busy when we were there.

If you do not have a handicap I do not think it is a problem.  However, you will have to have a 'playability test' with the pro who has to establish that you are above a 26 handicap for men 34 for women.  It seems more annoying for those with UK club handicap certificates to have to do the same thing.  I am sure this must be wrong and will try to investigate further.  Apparantly there is a form you can get which you send to the Spanish Golf regulatory, pay 50 euros, and then you can get a proper Spanish handicap which avoids you paying the 3 euros insurance each time you play and will hopefully be recognised by Roda with regard to standard.  I expect it will cost about 50 euro to have the playability test so this might be a better option but I really do not think they know what they are doing at the moment so it probably depends which of the Devere staff you ask.

Does anyone else have a clearer picture of how they are going to monitor player handicap standards?  We were not asked for our certificates and in view of the amount of societies playing it was obvious that neither were many other players.  However, their conditions state otherwise and I think they will introduce some rules shortly.

The staff at the pro shop do not ask for handicap cert at the moment.

In future this i am sure this will change, but for the time being you just have to pay 3 euro for the insurance to the Spanish golf union.

To avoid this charge you need to pay for 1 lesson from the pro who will then send off for your Spanish cert at an annual charge of 60 euros.

Unless you are intending to play more than 20 times a year its best just to pay the 3 euro each time you play.

Hi Sugarmummy

Sounds like you had a good visit.  What did you think of the course?  It was very busy when we were there.  The closest course is La Manga at 160 euros a round so no wonder Roda is attracting so much interest.  Also we were told La Finca etc have very bad greens at the moment so another reason Roda is doing well. It does seem to depend on which member of staff you speak to with regard to the exact plan of action for the handicap situation for the future though. I have since spoken to someone who said you can go direct to the Spanish Golf Union to get your Spanish certificate thus avoiding the lesson with the pro but we will wait and see on this.  We were really pleased with the course and had a great meal in the temporary clubhouse.  The only problem was it was close to the island green - is it the 7th or 18th I have not got a clue now and one ball hit the temporary clubhouse while we were eating!  Where is the permanent clubhouse going to be?  Oops sorry perhaps I should post this to the Clubhouse forum.  Better sign off before I write an essay!

The tempory club house over looks the 18th & 16th greens. If any one has hit the club house then i suggest they need to visit the pro.

The food /drinks and service are 5*, with home made pizza and what i call proper burgers excellent with chips cooked in virgin olive oil.!!

The new clubhouse will over look the 7th green which is the signature hole at Roda.

There is now another new course opened called La Serena just on the south side of LA. The easiest way to find the course is to  take the LA south exit off the AP7. Then its just a few minutes drive back towards LA.

We made a visit to look around and must say its a very nice cluhouse, rather posh in fact.

The green fee is 65 euro, but if you join Club Murcia there is a 10% reduction. The course looks challenging with as lot more water than Roda.

All the golfers on the forum look forward to further info on Spanish handicaps asap
