I know that the apartments in Calanova are pre-wired for Sky and all blocks have their own 'dish'.  Has anyone who has completed on their apartment got as far as installing their Sky?

If so, is it just a case of buying a Sky box and plugging it in???  We do not want any packages that you pay for, we just want to install a box that gives you all the English 'freeview' channels.

Any replies appreciated.

Many thanks

Michelle

I did see the satellite dish on the roof and assumed it is for the normal Euro free to air channels, BBC World and a bunch of Italian, French, German, Polish, Turkish etc.

My agent advises that for SKY you will need a larger dish. When the management company is formed we could arrange a communal dish.

Hi A,

When we carried out our initial snag back in August, we asked the developers representative about installing Sky boxes.  He pointed out there is one dish on the roof of each block and that the apartments had pre-installation for sky in both the master bedroom and the lounge of each apartment.

Our understanding was that if the dish was there and the apartments were pre-wired, it would just be a case of purchasing a box with a blue sky card (this covers all the freeview channels as per the UK) and plugging it in!!

You have now given me cause for concern, as if your agent is advising that we'll need a bigger dish then thats going to take time (and more money) to be set up.  We assumed we would be able to provide holiday makers with english TV from day one.  Sad I know, but some people can't live without their fix of Eastenders and Corrie, even while on holiday!!!

If you or any other owners manage to find out anything else about this, please let me know!

Hi!

I am going to be renting long term in this development (when completion has happened!) I have lived here 2 years so far. I think you will find the dish on the roof is Sat tv not Sky sat tv. I think you will have to have a community dish errected and then run your own individual boxes from this ..... when you will be able to do this you need to take up with the developers as sometimes they make you wait until your community comittee is formed which could be up to 6 months!! I would press for this to be done before! I want Sky telly too! I can recommend a good company to do this, they have worked for several other communities I know and are very reliable but obviously that is up to the owners I will just be a tennent!! I have no links with them .... just a satisfied customer of 2 years!

However Please post here if you know anything else ...... I can't live without the footie!!!

We were out last week and we connected up our TV and Sky Box.

It would appear that Hannah is right and we will have to wait for a community dish to be erected, as the sky box would not function.

However, we could not even get Spanish television to work!  Not sure if this is because of the fact we are still running on builders electric and water, so its not wired in properly yet.

I guess its a case of watch this space for Tv!

If any owners have any updates, please get in touch.

Many thanks

Michelle & Alex.

Been staying here for last week or so - We are getting about 4 or 5 Spanish TV Channels with good reception.

Will need to get a community Sky dish ASAP to get SKY.

In recent months most British Terrestrial Television has become FREE to view. This means NO subscription for the following channels:
All ITV channels, ITV1, 2, 3, 4 & All BBC channels, BBC1, 2, 3 ,4

To receive these channels it is NOT necessary to have a Sky digital receiver, nor a card, nor pay any subscription. This is a real case of “free TV” without the asterisk!

So far, the only way to get British Terrestrial Television in Spain is from Astra 2. Generally speaking, you will need to get a professional to install your satellite dish correctly. And for those DIY fans who are not phased by modern sat-com technology, this satellite can be found at 28.2ºE of South. But then you already knew that, didn’t you?

This, from another thread,

One thing communities need to be cogniscent of if they go for an unlicensed tv system - either a Sky dish which is not licensed for use in Spain or a 're-broadcast' system - is the implication of the European Copyright Directive. Amongst other things, this states that the distribution of copyrighted property - which includes the good old Beeb programmes - without the permission of the copyright owner is illegal anywhere in the EU.

This is what prompted seizures of re-broadcast equipment in Murcia recenty and before that in Lanzarote.

For an individual to be in receipt of a signal is a civil matter, for a community to be complicit in its distribution is in fact a criminal matter. Your administrator should advise you of this fact before you make a decision.

Also - don't hijack any existing TV distribution mechanism at the expense of a terriestrial signal as this is also illegal under Spanish law. Regardless of whether the community may all agree to do this, community statues are expressly forbidden to contradict national (and therefore by implication EU) law.

Hi!

Wondering if anyone has a Sky dish sorted yet? It is nearly Christmas and I may be able to move in however .... can you imagine Christmas with an 11 year old and no telly!!!! I understand the last post etc however most communities here do have dishes with no problems. I certainly can't live without the tv. .... if it can't be sorted I may have to rent somewhere else ..... I would be renting in block 6. Any info anyone?

Hannah
