Hi All - I have a guest visiting end of this month and they are having trouble booking car hire as they dont have a credit card - only a debit card. Does anyone know of a car hire company that takes debit cards ? Many thanks. Cathy.

I suggest that they quickly apply for a credit card that offers a Zero% loading and transfer fees for use in Europe. Which? recommends Saga (only available to over 50's like me), Halifax Clarity, Nationwide, Post Office, and Sainsbury's.

Check out the Which? web pages as using a Debit card overseas can be very expensive, and if a Car Hire company does take a debit card, then they are also likely to be more expensive.

The cards generally offer a far better exchange rate than cash, and paying then off in their interest free period will ensure the best overall deal.

Also have a look through the numerous comments about car hire in Spain before choosing a deal!

Mike.

Nationwide offer the best deal for foreign travellers. Virtually business exchange rate and no charges to use whilst abroad.

As this is my day job...

Just a note about using Debit cards in more 'risky' circumstances.

If youre Debit card is compromised, this is linked usually to your current bank account. Banks are less sophisticated in their fraud prevention/detection techniques than the card issuers and also you could quickly end up overdrawn with cruicial bills not paid and great difficulty sorting things out.

A compromised Credit card is less of a worry as your day to day finances are not usually affected.

Also Car Hire companies may take a deposit from your card for damage to tyres etc wgich may lock up your available balance.

On the plus side in Spain card transactions are much safer as proof of ID is always requested.

Mike.
