The Spanish Fly - Travels in Spain

The Spanish Fly is a nom de plume of Paul Whitelock who first visited Spain at the age of 20. Now more than 5 decades later, he has been to most parts of the country, including nine of the 12 islands. He has owned property in Andalucia since 2001 and has lived in the region since 2009. This blog is about some of the places he has visited and about tourism in Spain in general.

The Andalusian Deal
Wednesday, August 12, 2026 @ 8:00 AM

Is tourism in Spain in crisis? What with anti-tourist demonstrations in Barcelona, Mallorca, Valencia, Alicante and Tenerife and ever-rising prices in all tourist areas of the country, you could be forgiven for thinking that was the case. Yet the numbers of foreign tourists keep on coming, especially from northern and eastern Europe, North America, the Far East and even Russia and Australia/New Zealand.

Andalusia, where we live, relies heavily on tourism. It's the biggest industry hereabouts. The powers-that-be * have put together a deal - The Andalusian Deal (El Trato Andaluz) - as part of their current publicity campaign.

The tourist

..... acknowledges that Andalusia is the home of the Andalusian people and undertakes to care for them, to travel around their homeland, to honour their freedom, enjoy the food, respect the siesta and late at night, get to know their culture, save water and protect their streets.

The Andaluz/a

..... undertakes to open the doors of his/her homeland, to welcome you the tourist as though s/he had always known you without knowing you at all. S/he will welcome you with art, friendliness and closeness.

The signing of the deal

Both parties mutually recognising the importance of signing and knowing that a deal is sacred, consciously accept that they will be signing with the soul what Andalusia offers from the heart.
