The "Guiri" Gourmet

The "Guiri" Gourmet likes his food. He eats well at home, as his wife is an outstanding cook, but they also like to dine out or go on a "tapas" tour. This blog is about some of their experiences, both in Spain and elsewhere.

From 'La Chica' to 'Fire and Earth'
Wednesday, September 30, 2026 @ 8:11 AM

These are both restaurants - 'La Chica' in Montejaque (Málaga) and 'Akelarre' in Ronda (also Málaga). We pushed the boat out and have eaten in both in the last week.

At 'La Chica' we dined with good friends Brenda and Laurie, who have just recently bought a house - well, two adjacent properties actually - as a renovation project. We viewed their purchase before going for dinner. There is a lot to do, but the contractors have already made a start, so we had to tread carefully during our 'inspection'. Brenda and Laurie hope to be up and running in six months, offering both houses as holiday rentals when not using them themselves.

Back to our dinner. We did a bit of sharing - very convivial and typically Spanish.

We had olives fried in breadcrumbs, zorruña (similar to a serranito), a noodle dish with seafood and milanesa napolitana. All delicious.

Washed down with several beers we were left with a bill of just 55.50 euros. Brothers Rubén (the chef) and Borja Tornay López have turned this former private house into a must-visit venue in the village.

At 'Akelarre', fuego y tierra, we sat inside in what was formerly a cochera, a garage for a car. It was our debut here.

We ordered separate dishes, although we did taste each others. Rita started with tataki de atún rojo con algas (raw red tuna with seaweed) and finished with lubina desierto (fried sea bass with all the trimmings). I went for risotto de hongos (mushroom risotto) and salmón con patata y boniato (salmon with baked and sweet potato slices). We drank non-alcoholic beer.

For dessert we chose chocolate negro belga con sombrero de helado (Belgian dark chocolate spongecake topped with ice cream) and torrija con helado (French toast with ice cream).

Our overall verdict was that we had eaten well with exquisite tastes and flavours in a delightful atmosphere.
