The "Guiri" Gourmet

The "Guiri" Gourmet likes his food. He eats well at home, as his wife is an outstanding cook, but they also like to dine out or go on a "tapas" tour. This blog is about some of their experiences, both in Spain and elsewhere.

The newly-opened Don Manuel, Ronda

A puréed and simmering carrot soup in a pot with a spoonWe had originally booked for dinner on the Sunday after the hotel re-opened under new ownership the day before. However, we received a message early on Sunday evening from new owner David Garcia saying that they had no food left - they had been eaten out of house and home by the lunchtime crowd! Some 300 covers, we were told. "¡Impresionante!"

A week later we decided to try again, but at lunchtime.

The Big Day

A puréed and simmering carrot soup in a pot with a spoonWe arrived at just after 3.00 pm and sat in the new and modernised main restaurant.

Rita suggested we share a starter and a salad, so we went for patatas arrieras and ensalada de queso de cabra, frutos secos, mostaza y miel. Both dishes were outstanding and the portion size generous.

For her main course Rita chose medallon de solomillo a la brasa and I went for merluza en salsa verde, both with chips and a guarnicion of vegetables.

The pork loin and the hake were a little dry, it has to be said, yet I enjoyed mine anyway.

We were full, so opted out of a pudding.

To drink we both had cerveza sin, San Miguel 0,0% tostada.

The bill came to a very reasonable 55 euros.

"Afters" were live music on the terrace. "La Escalera", a modern flamenco band from Ronda, entertained what had become a large crowd for two 50-minute sessions. They were very good.

Towards the end it was getting a bit nippy as the sun went down and people started to drift off.

Nevertheless I had spent an enjoyable five hours eating well and listening to high quality live music.

The next gig is planned for two weeks' time - band to be announced.
