Gib tug-of-war: Margallo says 'the relationship of trust' between Spain and the Rock has 'broken down'
Friday, August 23, 2013 @ 12:15 PM

STRICT border controls by Spanish authorities on cars entering and leaving the Rock have been staged to prevent smuggling because 'the relationship of trust between Spain and Gibraltar has broken down', claims the former's foreign affairs minister.

“This has forced us to impose stricter control measures at the border to fight against illegal trafficking,” the minister declared.

José Manuel García-Margallo said in a press conference in Brussels today that if the relationship were able to be re-established, the controls may be reduced.

“As soon as this trust is recovered, it is most probable that we will be able to reduce our efforts at the border – which are very expensive for the Spanish government – provided we have the cooperation of the government of Gibraltar,” Margallo added.

Fasinating, not a headline about Rajoy and corruption. The press is so easily diverted..

Another excuse, I thought it was all about the underwater reef Gibraltar built to protect marine life !!!!!!! not forgetting the one they built in Valencia for the same purpose, but that one has come under a smoke screen conveniently.

The dolly goes out of the pram again !
We go back to Franco when Gib would not submit,
so he closed the gate. Nothing has changed
with this corrupt lot either. Same old story.

P.S, Glad to see we can comment again without
having wasted our time, writing our reply - then unable
to post it with the crazy E.O.S. security system !!!!

There are plenty of Brits in Spain - hit the spanish where it hurts in the pocket. Dont buy from the spanish unless you absolutely have to. Boycott Spain for holidays - maybe consider France instead.

Juicy Lucy.
This is a political issue that will be sorted through the right channels within Europe. Not coming to Spain for holidays will hit British bar owners in places like Benidorm very hard too. And besides, it's not the fault of the Spanish people that their government are idiots, so it's not fair to make them pay. Besides, it's ok to suggest France but I went there last year and nearly died when I saw the prices of beer and food. It's a very expensive alternative.

There are to sides to every dispute. The Spanish side is.How can 30000 Gibraltarians smoke millions of cigarettes in a year and drink such large quantities of scotch whisky. use the medical services of the hospitals in Spain.I believe there is a large quantity of oil stored in tankers tied up in Gibraltar. If there is a spill the Spanish beaches will be ruined. I also think the telephone lines for Gib go through Spain.

Clive - Gib has problems with Spanish untreated human waste in Gib waters too. Yes the phone lines are in Spain - should not
be long before some acehole comes along with the wire cutters.

Lets keep this all in perspective. The PP are not exactly free of corruption and will do anything to keep the payments issue with Rajoy off the agenda. Also as widely reported there are many ministers in the PP government at present related ie with family ties to people who were in Franco's regime. Hardly a recipe form harmonising relations with Gib.

One can make the assumption as I did at first that the PP looked like a moderate centre rights party when comparing what we know about politics on the UK. When one looks at the increasingly odd legislation coming out of Madrid from the PP you can start to see a pattern of a party hand in glove with a few thousand people who really run the country for their own benefit.

As a consequence I start to why your average Spaniard takes the approach they do to all sorts of things whether its tax, obsession with property buying and the Gib thing. I seriously doubt the majority of Spaniards care about Gib they are to busy living for now.

However, the current Gib administration is not blameless either. They are very extreme in their views also. Both parties need to shift their positions. They (gib gov) could start by making tobacco the same price as Spain.

Spain has already had a concession from Gibralta which I think is very fair.Spain scans your passport when you leave Gib at customs. then you are not allowed to take cigarettes or alcohol from Gib to spain again for another calander Month and it is only 1 carton of cigarettes and 1ltr of spirits you are allowed anyway.

Gibraltar is a pirate bay, the "cachondeo" has been running for a while and some day will have to come to a stop.. certainly this will never happen under a Spanish week socialist goverment...

The *cachondeo" ( joke ) is not that funny if stuck in a 6 hour
traffic jam organised by the corrupt and weak socialist government.

Territories/Colonies have no place in 21st century. It's time for all those few Colonialist to behave in a civilized manner and call it a day.that goes for Gib as well and if the Gibbys feel so British "What are they doing in a tiny corner of Spain? They should be better of to be fully loyal and find space. there at least they won't be treated as immigrants.

How clean and honest are your MPs' (check mate) many of you could not wait to run away from from your countries to enjoy the Spanish Life Style and at the time behaving two-faced! shame on you shameless to be so hypocritical. Remember who grows the food that may be on your plate when next you say your graces. The sea & sun too and need I say more?

Now now you lot there's no call for mud slinging please,we all know it's to divert attention from Rajoy, but don't forget Gibraltar employs between 8/10000 Spanish and Spain too has it's African towns, the problem is Gibraltans have to travel into Spain or get a rowing boat! it may belong to Britain but they Gibraltans a mix of both.
