Subscribe for updates

I've been getting lots of complaints from people about the fact that I'm so lazy with my blog. To be honest, I keep forgetting I've got it!

Anyway, I've made a pact with myself to be a better blogger from now on and to post loads of pics all the time. I've also got some great stuff that I'm going to be blogging about.

So, if you want to be kept up to date with when I update my blog just fill in your name and email address on the right hand side and you'll get an email with my latest post.

Great....but I promise to make them more interesting!

When healthcare in Spain goes wrong

In today's newsletter we featured a really disturbing account of the poor treatment received by an expat who had private healthcare insurance in Spain. It's a letter of complaint sent by the wife of the deceased man to the medical insurance company. You can read a copy of the letter at:

When healthcare in Spain goes wrong

I think it's important for people to read this letter, it's not just about the poor treatment received but also the terrible way in which the funeral was handled. It's often a subject that no one really likes to think about these things are different in Spain and it's best to be prepared or make sure arrangements are made well in advance.

Apart from that we also featured the following articles in our newsletter:

Fuengirola zoo at night

One of my favourite things about Spain is night time. As I get older the heat seems to bother me more and more so the relaxed cool evenings suit me so much better. I also love the fact that you can actually do so much at night.

Last night at about 8 O'clock we decided to go off to Fuengirola zoo for the evening. It's open until midnight and if you've never been there and you've got kids it's definitely worth going to. It's a small zoo and oddly placed in the the town itself but it's a great place to spend a few hours.

The thing is that during the day it's just too uncomfortable with the heat at the moment which is why the zoo is open until midnight during the summer months. But it has a totally different and unique feel at night.

We noticed that in the monkey area as night fell the monkies seem to disappear somewhere and out of nowhere appeared what seemed to be three cheetahs. Then where the oraguntangs are during the day, in the evening they've gone somewhere else only to be replaced by a pack of foxes.

I'm not even going to tell you about the bats.....

But the best thing of all, and it was totally unexpected, they had an African band that put on a show at the end of the night. It was simply superb, I've never seen African dancers live and they are so impressive. It was, believe it or not, one hell of an evening at the zoo.

Recommend it to anyone, with or without kids.

By the way, there is a restaurant there too and although the food isn't great it is surprisingly cheap.

Add Fuengirola zoo to your list of things to do when you're over here, but only for the evening.

And finally, we sent our newsletter out yesterday. If you missed it we featured the following articles in it:

Happy birthday Eye on Spain

Tomorrow, 12 July 2007, Eye on Spain is officially 3 years old, so it's just a baby still! It's also Susan's birthday so priority tomorrow must go to Susan in terms of celebrations (only a brave man would argue that one).

But that's not to say that I'm not hugely proud of what we've achieved with Eye on Spain in a relatively short space of time with very limited resources. In fact, I am immensely proud of how the site has taken off, especially when people email me and tell me what a help we've been to them. Those emails are priceless. But it's been quite a struggle to get here....

When we kicked off the site three years ago it was quite a different concept. People would pay us an annual fee of 99 Euros and we would provide them with monthly photos of the construction of their development. Seems like a great idea, even Sir Alan Sugar thought it was. But despite our efforts and ploughing all our money into it it never really took off. We moved over here and my plans had shown we had enough money to last us a year....at least. How wrong was I!!

Three months after moving year we had effectively used up most of our cash. With an office, a useless marketing employee, kids in private nursery, an expensive house to rent and just a trickle of orders it all seemed doomed. So, we did away with the office, the useless marketing employee and worked out of the house instead. Oh, did I mention that we had no phone line at the house, as there was no facility for one??

Anyway, we kept the business ticking along in the background and I started building websites for other people. That is one option I wouldn't advise anyone. Building websites for others is HARD work, there is never an end and the customer never wants to pay more for more work. If you're thinking of doing it....DON'T!!!

It all looked quite bleak at this stage and after 12 months my finger was literally balancing over the "Stop" button.

But destiny being destiny had obviously decided that it wasn't time for Eye on Spain to die yet.

Through a friend we managed to rent an apartment in Marbella with a phone line.....you can't imagine how much I hugged that phone line every night. The business was going nowhere and I was just about to switch off the website and call it a day when....

...a chance meeting with someone who has since become a good friend, taught me something which literally changed my life and Eye on Spain was able to live again...and blossom.

Today I am a very, very happy man. Thank you ___________ _____________ .

One day I'll tell you what he taught me.

But tomorrow, I'm taking the day off. No big parties, we're just going to have a nice day with the kids and then go out for a lovely dinner.

Here's to the next 3 years....how exciting!

Back from cold Paris

We got back from cold Paris on Saturday after a great time with Mickey and Minnie. I think we'll definitely be seeing them again soon. There were loads of Spanish there too as all the Spanish kids are on holiday at the moment, so it didn't really feel like we were away. Even the French were ok! (I can say that, some of my family are French).

After being in the surreal surroundings of Disneyland it took a bit of time to readjust back to normality, especially returning to a packed inbox. Lovely.

Anyway, after getting my brain in gear I managed to get the Eye on Spain newsletter out today. We featured the following articles in it this week:

We're really busy at the moment. We've got some great stuff lined up over the next few months. I'll keep you informed as things progress...
