Fuengirola zoo at night

One of my favourite things about Spain is night time. As I get older the heat seems to bother me more and more so the relaxed cool evenings suit me so much better. I also love the fact that you can actually do so much at night.

Last night at about 8 O'clock we decided to go off to Fuengirola zoo for the evening. It's open until midnight and if you've never been there and you've got kids it's definitely worth going to. It's a small zoo and oddly placed in the the town itself but it's a great place to spend a few hours.

The thing is that during the day it's just too uncomfortable with the heat at the moment which is why the zoo is open until midnight during the summer months. But it has a totally different and unique feel at night.

We noticed that in the monkey area as night fell the monkies seem to disappear somewhere and out of nowhere appeared what seemed to be three cheetahs. Then where the oraguntangs are during the day, in the evening they've gone somewhere else only to be replaced by a pack of foxes.

I'm not even going to tell you about the bats.....

But the best thing of all, and it was totally unexpected, they had an African band that put on a show at the end of the night. It was simply superb, I've never seen African dancers live and they are so impressive. It was, believe it or not, one hell of an evening at the zoo.

Recommend it to anyone, with or without kids.

By the way, there is a restaurant there too and although the food isn't great it is surprisingly cheap.

Add Fuengirola zoo to your list of things to do when you're over here, but only for the evening.
