Mojacar in Almeria

Published on 10/13/2009 in Places of Interest

Mojacar is an attractive Moorish town in Spain and located on the Costa de Almeria. It is the biggest & most favoured tourist resort in South East Spain. Mojacar has 2 main areas Mojacar Pueblo (Town) & Mojacar Playa (Beach). Each area offers something different and is approximately 2 kilometres apart.

Mojacar Pueblo is undoubtedly one of the most romantic & picturesque towns in Spain. With it's whitewashed houses and cobbled streets perched on top of a hill overlooking the Mediterranean, it is easy to see why this unspoilt Moorish fortress town has long been popular with artists & writers alike.

Mojacar puebloVisit the fortified Renaissance church of Santa Maria, the 15th Century Mojacar Castle & the remains of the 'Puerta de la Ciudad' (Gates of the City) to experience the historic side to Mojacar. A law passed in 1987 ensures that the Arab architecture, which creates the feeling of being on the African continent rather than in Southern Europe, is protected. Every summer a spectacular 'Moors & Christians' Fiesta honours the town's Arab ancestry.

Mojacar Playa is only 2 km away and is a modern day holiday resort with 5 kilometres of bustling beaches lined by restaurants, bars & cafes. Thankfully well observed building laws have prevented high rise concrete development unlike other parts of Spain. Villas & Hotels lining the seafront have been restricted to a maximum of 4 storeys with a style in keeping with the town's other Moorish buildings.

Every modern convenience can be found along the Playa. The Commercial Centre is located in Mojacar Playa on the seafront and its were you will find designer shops, supermarkets, restaurants, bars, mediacal centre, and Spectrum FM's main office (English speaking radio station). Directly opposite this shopping area you will find the Tourist Information Centre.

Golf Courses close to Mojacar include Marina Golf, Aguilan Golf, Playa Macenas, Desert Springs, El Cortijo Grande and Valle del Este Golf Resort. Playa Macenas opened in 2008 and is regarded as one of the most upmarket and modern golf courses in Andalucíaa. The resort covers a total of 140 hectares and has a kilometre of coastline, the only new resort in the region to do so. Aguilon was also opened in 2008. It is located between the foothills of the Sierra Aguilon Mountains and Pulpi Bay, 25 kilometres from Mojacar and close to the beautiful holiday resort of San Juan de los Terreros.

The Valle del Este Golf Resort is one of Southern Spain's most prestigious golf courses. The resort facilities include many shops, restaurants, golf, tennis, swimming pools, banks together with everything offered by the Valle del Este Hotel.
