I know I've asked this before, but I'm still unsure on the answer.

We are travelling over again on Friday (supposed to be thursday but the French Air Strike resulted in that flight being cancelled. First they cheat us out of the world cup and now this!!). We have booked our car hire again with doyouspain as they seem to be the cheapest by some margin.

My question is this, whenever we pick up our car, irrespective of whoever we book with, we are always presented with a load on new additional insurance details and asked if we want to take them up (e.g. wheel insurance). Can anyone advise what additional insurance on top of the car hire itself is actually needed, and what extras are more of a con?

Thanks,

Frank

Hi Frank,

A friend of mine has recommended to me that I look at getting annual cover, kind of like multitrip health insurance. He uses http://www.carhireexcess.ie/ - they charge around E50 for cover for the full year.

Might be worth looking at if you are getting out to Corvera quite often?

Regards,

Ian

Hi, 4 carhire.com now quotes £49 for the year. iCarhireinsurance is £39.99 covers all the excess. I have not used them, has anyone any knowledge of them? Both come in a lot cheaper then the hire company, over the 12 months.

Regards

Ron

Thanks Ian, Paul and Carol.

That's what I have now done and it answered my concerns (in particular that it is a good idea to be covered) . This is the 4th time I have travelled over this year so it makes complete sense. At least now I won't have to worry if I am signing for something I didn't know if I needed or not, or if I was paying well over the odds.

Hi

Bought he annual car insurance from 1carhireinsurance.

Just back from trip this weekend flying into Alicante and rented from Record car rentals.  They highlighted the problem with these annual policies in that even if you have these policies, they will only pay out if the "accident" is deemed part of the excess.  The Record car rental rep told me that Record (and other low cost rental companies) will only state this if you can prove that the "accident" is not your fault, otherwise they will treat the "accident" as negligence and will not issue a statement for use by the annual car insurance company. So, looks like these policies (if you believe the Record rep) are not worth it.  Sounds like a stitch up by the low cost rental companies, so that they can continue to earn commission on these insurance "extras" charged at the airport.

Has anyone made a claim using these annual policies ?

kenny
