If you simply rinse your water bottle before re-filling it, you could end up with a severe tummy upset from drinking contaminated water.
So says Dr Francisco Guillen, professor of Preventive Medicine and Public health at Navarra University.

In drinking direct from a re-usable water bottle, we inadvertently introduce micro-organisms from our mouths into the receptacle.
The bacteria can include streptococcus, actinomyces, neisseria or rothia and can lead to an unpleasant bout of gastro-entiritis.

So, it's essential to wash out the bottle with washing-up liquid, using a bottle brush and plenty of elbow grease.
It's also important to pay attention to the screw top, the thread and drinking straws if used.
If your bottle is used for tea, coffee or juice, it's even harder to clean out the residues, so extra effort is needed.
