Tick Tock

Hi and Hola

I am currently in the process of selling my house, furniture and altogether changing my life.
I am 39 the big 40 next year in Spain, whooooooah, party, party !
At the moment the sale of my house is going through nicely, I am very fortunate as now really is not the time to sell in the UK.  We do have a beautiful unique house and would not be selling it if it was not for the adventure we are about to take.
I am currently still working in S.Wales in a college but have to admit I feel as if my head in everywhere BUT....BUTT being the operative word !!!
My daughter is 16 on Monday and last Sunday moved out to live with her father as she does not want to move to Spain.
Gosh I broke my heart, I sobbed, cried, drank Strongbow by the river (our land joins onto the river) looked like a panda and starting thinkin am I doing the right thing.    My friends said tho no matter when your children leave you will always feel like I did.
My son will be 13 on Tuesday and at the moment is undecided if he is coming with us or not, BUT i have not even looked at schools so I think I may have a problem there........ any advice...

The story continues...

Wow, you're certainly serious about moving!

Since your son is 13, as it would be really difficult for him to pick up Spanish well he would need to go to an international school. There are many along the coast although not cheap so spend some time looking around. That's if he decides he does want to go with you.

Best of luck. Will follow your blog to see how you get on.

I would advice waiting a few years! Your son is at a very crucial age where it will be harder for him to make friends and you really need to give some thought to his education, there are hardly any job opportunities for youngsters out here that cannot speak Spanish fluently and if you disturb his education now at such a crucial stage? Also you are moving to start a business which is saturated with like minded people who are struggling to make a living! I have seen so many young people practically given up on as there parents moved them at the wrong age, they either will not or cannot afford for private education and the kids leave school barely able to write their own name! I know that I must sound like a real
pessimist but we have lived in Spain for the last 6 years so we know what we are talking about, every time we see a tv programme with an ethusisatic couple planning to open a bar, bed n breakfast or any other like minded business we are cringing shouting at the TV not too do it! Please please do not buy, rent first! do not burn all your bridges in Wales as the grass is not always greener! Anyway whatever you choose to do we wish you the BEST of luck, watch your back and do not be fooled by any fellow countrtymen / english idiots!

It is tough out here. Setting up a business is a massive undertaking especially in a foreign country. Most of the time it's not all happy endings as they show on the telly. It's hard work.

We see many teenage expat kids hanging around refusing to go to school as they cannot understand anything in the classroom.

Your 13 year old will have a tough time out here unless he goes into an international school.

Also, like Julie says, don't sell your home just yet. Rent for a couple of years until you're convinced it's right for you.

Best of luck.
