NIE number..........

hi to every one. how hard is it to obtain a nie number and what documents do you need ?? and do the children need nie numbers?

They are needed if you are appyling for a mortgage, and are relatively easy to apply for either in the uk or in spain however dont leave it until the last minute especially if applying in the uk as thier is currently a backlog.

You will need a copy of your passport,2 passport size photos and a completed application form.
If doing this in Spain you will get a form from them(modelo 790) that needs to be paid before you collect the certificate.go to the bank and pay this and then go back approx 3 days later to pick up your certificate.
In total timewise this will take you approximately 2 hours max in all.
It is so easy now,all the myths about huge queues and getting up at silly o'clock in the morning are just that, myths
If you do it in the UK i think they charge you some ridiculous rate to do it.
Its 7€ if done in Spain

Hmmm... Slightly simplistic reply there.  You need an NIE to purchase property not just if you need a mortgage.  You need an NIE to sign on the padron, you need an NIE to apply for residence, you need an NIE to buy a car. etc etc etc.
In other words, you need an NIE for nearly everything.

Except to say, we didn't pay anything for our NIE, just the photos and copy of a water bill did it for us.

No i didn't pay for mine either ( many moons ago),unfortunately the law has changed recently and you do have to pay for them now.

You can't get one anymore without having the form stamped at the bank where you pay for it.
as usual they didn't announce they were doing this,just pinned it to the notice boards in the police stations.

If you apply for it in the UK as we did the problem is not only the long wait but it then getting lost 
You have to give your address in Spain which can be difficult if like ours the property wasnt finished.We used our lawyer's address which was also a difficulty because he rented rooms and the first copy went astray.I should defo do it in Spain if you can as I get the impression it is much easier.

Our solicitor included the gaining of an NIE number in our conveyancing cost. It is still possible to have your solicitor gain NIE in Cartagena, but you will also need a financial interest in the area to justify the application .We opened a bank account.
