Not strictly for the healthcare in Spain, although the answer may lay here.
Does anyone know of a broker that is able to find sensible holiday insurance premiums cancer sufferers, eiter UK insurer of Spanish? I ask because my Uncle has lung cancer and if we ever overcome our apartment buying problems in Spain, would like to offer it to him in an attempt to see if the climate can help him at all. The problem is that the premiums are in their 1000's and it would be cheaper to charter an aircraft to get him home should there be a problem. Even a limited cover that would cover re- patriation costs would be better than nothing.
Thanks
Mark

We have always used Direct Travel insurance.

My father (aged 86 and suffers from diabetes) was given insurance for 125 pounds for a two week stay. A lot more than someone under 70 with no problems but it was the only one that would even consider it. You can ring them for a quote and they say one chronic illness wll not rule out insurance. The phone number is on the website. They may not accept your uncle as it would depend on how advanced (eg, has DS1500 been completed) it is but it's worth a try. They've always been good when I asked for my Dad.
Alternatively, Saga insurance may be able to help you out but they were a bit more expensive.

A friend of mine is a dialysis patient and she found travel insurance through the above link at half the price she was quoted through other companies. It may be worth a try. Good luck.

My father in law recently had a heart attack (less than three months before his holiday), I used the British Heart Foundation's website to search for a company who would cover his pre-existing condition. He ended up paying around £150 for a fortnight but as he had only had to pay for his flights (he stayed in our house) he didn't mind. Have you checked any of the Cancer websites? Sorry I don't know any. I do have a friend though whose sister has terminal cancer and she regularly goes out to their house in Spain, so I'll see if I can find out what cover she gets.

Hi, I'm afraid I'm not much help. As my friend's sister has been given a terminal prognosis she is unable to get travel insurance cover. So, basically she goes anyway but without any cover. She has decided it is worth it as she gets to spend a few weeks in a lovely climate, eating well, and relaxing. If she gets ill, as she has done on at least one occasion, they just bring their flights forward and fly home so she can go to her local hospital.

I think my Uncle has been told it is incurable, but not terminal yet. I remember my step mother used to go to Cyprus when she had cervical cacer with no insurance as the flight home was cheaper than the premium. Not sure how he will travel though as he now has an oxygen cylinder for the evenings.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I will pass them on to my Auntie to see if they can come up with anything decent.
Mark

This is always a delicate subject, but I know that my Dad when he was alive still flew to Ireland to come and see my family and I even without insurance. He had his EHIC so we understood that if something critical happened he would get care in a local hospital. The issue I think is if someone needs specialist repatriation via Air Ambulance to their home country. My view is that the benefit of my dad coming to see me outweighed any issue with cost and I think he would have got back on the plane regardless of how he felt. I think the bottom line is that if you have paid NI all your life then you should be covered for treatment in the country you visit (within the EU) and for the enjoyment such a trip brings..I think my Dad was right to fly regardless of his condition...
Hope this helps.....all the best
