Just doing some theorising at the moment, about buying a new car in the UK and then driving the old one out to Spain and leaving it there.  If this has been covered before, please point me in the right direction; couldn't find the information doing a search. We are just getting fed up with the amount we are paying on hire cars for each trip and the regular trawl trying to find the best price for each trip with full/full fuel policy.

Our plan would be to do a single crossing to Santander and drive through Spain taking a few days leisurely drive and seeing some parts that we never normally see.

I understand that if it stays on UK plates, to keep it legal it needs to return home annually for its MOT, and insurance is an issue as it is out of the country too long to be covered.  I believe Spanish car insurance covers the car not the driver so family members would also be able to drive it - can anybody confirm.

How do we get it registered in Spain and what cost is involved.

Or is the general opinion to forget it - sell it in the UK and use the money to put towards a car already in Spain.

We also have to consider the problem of transport between our Spanish home and the airport it we keep it at home, or airport parking at Malaga between trips.

Any thoughts on the subject?

Thread: Taking a British Car to Spain

10 Oct 2008 10:04 AM:

Having just come back from our apartment and had the last three days ruined by continual rain (well a couple of weeks ago to be accurate) my mind has turned to the benefit of being able to dry the clothes, towels etc that we leave out there.  I am trying to persuade husband that we need a tumble drier.

Stupid question, but do they have washer/dryer combos in Spain?  All I can find on Urende/Boulanger/El Corte Ingles sites are separate tumble driers and there is no room for one of those without turning bathroom 2 into a part bathroom/part utility room affair.

Anybody know the answer to this?

Thanks Baboal - great help.  If I know I can go without packing a courier box before I go, it will make life easier.

I have recently been diagnosed with Coeliac disease and need to cope with a gluten-free diet when we visit our apartment.  We are in the Marbella area.  Does anybody have any idea whether I can get gluten-free flour/bread etc in the supermarkets easily or do I need to go elsewhere.  All advice will be very gratefully supplied.

We asked Ocean about the Legal Title Insurance earlier last year when it appeared that our development was illegal - all the usual, no LFO, validity of building licence being looked at etc.  They said it would not cover our issues.
