Hi thanks for the replies. A recent post about NIE forms seemed to indicate that it takes 4 weeks from attending the Police Station to going back to get your numbers but I appreciate that might well depend on region. For clarity we will be initially renting in the Valencia region in or near a little place called Busot, a few miles north of Alicante, where our friends live. Despite not very many people apparently having heard of it house prices are not exactly cheap!!

Hi my wife and I have our house on the market in UK and once it sells (whenever that happens in this climate!!) we intend to move to Spain and initially rent long term to give us time to look around and purchase wisely. Do we need NIE numbers for this rental and if so can I come over with completed forms and both passports (for my wife and myself) and attend the police atation on our behalf or does my wife also have to attend.

I assume if these numbers are needed that we should do this asap since there is obviously a few weeks wait to get the numbers.

Welcome any thoughts.

Thanks Rob, sorry for delay in replying - we were away from home for a few days. Will certainly bear that area in mind when we come over. Looks like the 1500 odd souls who live in Busot do not frequent this site. Don't know if that's good or bad!!

Hi everyone having followed this great site for a number of months I thought I had better do my first blog as my wife amd I have just put our house in the UK on the market and once sold we are coming to Spain to finally retire! We have visited a few times mainly to friends who live in Busot, about 20 km from Alicante and we will be looking to rent a property there  for a few months before making a purchase either there or elsewhere if everything works out as we expect. Busot does not seem to come up on the forum very often (or really hardly ever) and I wondered if anyone had any first hand thoughts on living there - good or bad. I am sure I will be asking a number of questions as time moves on but at least that gets the ball rolling - hopefully not with a deafening silence!!
