Here's some advice:

  • Browse their website. Does it look professional? Are there photos of real people and trucks or is it more like a copy and paste effort? Any names or just people smiling? Check who owns the domain. Don't get confused with similar sounding company names or websites.
  • Check their company number (CIF in Spain if it's a limited company). This is easy with Google. Has the company many listings because of bad debts with the Tax Office? If it's a man and white van then you're wasting your time. These pop up from nowhere and vanish when they run into problems, especially on Facebook.
  • Get a detailed written quotation with a breakdown of what is and isn't included. If there's no mention of VAT or IVA then ask if it's included. Is it well presented or does it look like it's been prepared in 2 minutes? Ask what type of insurance they're offering? Fully comprehensive cover is never free by the way. Avoid paying in cash. Ask for a bank account number. Insist on a survey (house visit) unless you can provide a list with measurements.
  • Verify if they're members of any reputable trade association such as BAR or FEDEM and take a look at their premises because they could be middlemen or brokers. Don't rely on emails or phone calls (especially to mobile numbers). Do their vehicles look presentable?

Good luck!

Thread: Moving from UK to Spain Oct - which removal company is best?

To Poppyseed,

With all due respect please don't generalise Britannia. The group consists of over 50 family owned removal companies and you are making them all look unprofessional because you had a bad experience with one member. There are channels to go through to claim for damages but slagging off the whole group doesn't seem to be very constructive in my opinion.

There are many well respected moving companies on the Coast and I'm sure people have the common sense to know what questions to ask the representative of the removal company and to visit their depot/offices to get an idea of how trustworthy and professional a company really is.
