Good morning all. I appreciate this has probably been asked before, but I was wondering whether anyone could shed any light on the rules/regulations regarding using a UK plated vehicle in Spain. I have driven my car out to Spain and am thinking about leaving it here for an extended period so that I have access to a vehicle whenever I am staying at my holiday home. I have received conflicting advice regarding the time period after which I would have to get my vehicle re-registered on Spanish plates. Some people have said I do not need to do so as long as there is a valid MOT in place (the vehicle is fairly new, so won't need one for a couple more years); some say only if I use it for more than 6 months a year (I don't, it would predominately be kept in the garage); some say only if I am resident in Spain for over 6 months a year (I'm not); and some say it has to be re-registered after 6 months regardless of how often it is used or how often I am over in Spain, as this is Spanish law.

Any assistance whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

I dont know the answers to your questions so will be watching ths site. One thing I can warn you about is the Insurance on your car. Many UK insurers will only cover the car for 2 or 3 weeks outside UK. Last year I took my car over in May and left it there til end Oct and flew home for August. I had lengthy negotiations with my insurer to have the car covered while I wasnt actually driving it. I had to provide all sorts of evidence to prove it would be safe where parked and not in use. I was led to believe that 6 months was the limit for leaving the car in Spain without re registering it.

This is correct.....despite what other people will tell you.

It a right hassle re registering the car I used one of the companies that specialise in doing it.

Costs quite a bit but then you are fully legal
