Carnage on the roads today
Monday, February 15, 2010 @ 3:44 PM

It's raining again today but it's more like a monsoon than just rain.  As it is quite cold too I decided to put the fire on and work from home today.

I managed to get through all the wood in a couple of hours so decided to nip out to the garage to buy some more.

On my way down to the garage you would think that some huge natural disaster had hit the area:

On the hill down to Sabinillas there were four separate landslides blocking the road including a tree thrown across it.  Further down I drove past someone's house; they had their front door open and water was gushing out like a river.

At the bottom of the hill there was a huge traffic jam and the main N340 was closed with the diverted traffic causing mayhem.  Huge chunks have also lifted themselves from the road today leaving huge potholes.

All the back roads to Manilva were blocked due to severe flooding and broken roads.  There had been two accidents too that I saw.

All of this within a kilometre radius of where we live.

I was very glad to get back in one piece, even if the whole trip took me over an hour (should have been 10 minutes) and I think we'll be staying in for the rest of the day now.  At least it's nice and warm by the fire.

Ah-ha! Good thing we decided to stay in then!

At least it's not snow and ice!!!

We haven't been out for 3 days because we've got loads of snow and cannot get our car up our dirt track. It's thawing rapidly at the moment and we may venture out tomorrow and see if it's possible to get to tarmac. Still, I prefer snow to heavy rain - I had a lovely walk in it with the dogs yesterday and everywhere look beautiful - you cannot say the same for heavy rain!

Hope it all stops soon.

My Aunty told me many years ago when she had a town house in Mijas that there were similar floods back then (their car nearly got washed away on the coastal road!), so my question is........why don't the authorities recognise the need for some decent drainage systems that can cope with the torrents of rain when they descend? Given the observation from way back when, this is obviously not due to climate change, so wouldn't you think that something would have been done about this by now? Just a thought....
