Britons facing £15,000 fines in Canaries for letting homes & breaking a law that's not been enforced for years

Thousands of British families who rent out their holiday homes in the Canary Islands are facing fines of £15,000 after being caught out by a little-known law that has not been enforced for years.

The regional government is sending out teams of inspectors to check if foreign nationals have written permission to rent out their properties.

Yet the regulations, introduced in 1995, have not been applied for more than a decade and the authorities even stopped issuing new licences in 2002.

Cashed strapped governments will clamp down anywhere they can now eh? ;) And the law is the law, so there can't be much they can do I expect, apart from hold their hands up and empty their pockets.
