Diary of a Nobody

I've lived in southern Spain for over 16 years. I like to write/blog. It occurs to me that many of my articles are like a diary. So, from now on this is where I shall post my diary entries.

No, this not a report by the major British TV channel about the far-right "Nazi" party in Germany, the AfD (Alternative fur Deutschland).

It's about my Spanish MOT (Inspeccion Tecnica de Vehiculos - ITV) early this morning on April Fools' Day, April 1st.

What happened?

Well, my six-year-old Peugeot 2008 passed, although not with flying colours, I have to say. I have a few bodywork issues to attend to in the next two months.

As is the case here in Andalucia, the driver takes the car through the inspection and is required to respond to the instructions of the test examiner. Very different to the UK, where you leave the car at the MOT-testing centre and collect it later (or sit in the waiting room, drink free coffee and flick through dodgy magazines).

In Andalucia, at least, the cost is fixed. In the UK, it's a competitive market. If you shop around you can get an MOT test for "threepence ha'penny". Other autonomous regions in Spain may have different arrangements and regulations. Spain is a federal country, so many states, ie regions, are able to make changes to national policies  emanating from Madrid.

Also the frequency of the test is different. In Andalucia your first ITV "test" is due after four years from first registration, and then every two years up to 10 years. After that it's an annual requirement.

In the UK, the first MOT kicks in after three years and thereafter it's annual.

I'm intrigued by "a few bodywork issues". Do tell. My 12 year old Seat is a proper Spanish car with an array of dents, scratches and dings. It seems to get passed without any comment. Mind you I was gifted a real humdinger of a dent in the rear bumper a few months back but the kind person left me a note under the rear windscreen wiper. The phone number was fake so I've not bothered to get the dent sorted as am sure the car will collect a few more.

Hi, digger79
I learned something about Spanish car insurance last year that I didn't know. For insurance purposes a car has seven zones. If, for example, you wish claim for repairs to more than one zone, you have to pay the excess (franquicia) ON EACH ZONE! I think six of the seven zones on my car need to be repaired, which means I would have to stump up 6 x excess, in my case 6 x 200€ = 1200€. The damage remains, as I don't have 1200 to spare.
Besides, with the narrow alleys in the white villages around here, I'm sure to pick up a few more dents and scratches in the future. Just as you say.

Around here, Castellón province , the MOT is not fixed. Not at all. Wild variations. Do not know where you got that info from

Hi, sdleng. It may be different in Cataluña and in other autonomous regions. I was talking specifically about Andalucia and what I wrote is correct for Andalucia, based on meticulous research and 16 years of taking various cars through the test here. For clarity I have edited my article to make it clear that I'm only talking about Andalucia. The responsible body is VEIASA which stands for Verificaciones Industriales de Andalucía S.A. and is based in Sevilla, the regional capital.

https://www.veiasa.es

VEIASA es una empresa pública, dependiente de la Consejería de Industria, Energía y Minas de la Junta de Andalucía.

Wow I didn't know that about repair zones on cars over here. I've just renewed my insurance and my excess is 300 so couldn't even contemplate claiming. Thanks for the info and stay away from narrow alleys and supermarket parking spaces!
