Circle of Concern - Circle of Influence

Of all the good suggestions in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, "Habit 1: Be Proactive" is particularly useful when you feel powerless against life's forces. Covey recommends examining what you can do instead of focusing on worries over which you have no control. First notice all your concerns. Then, among those concerns, determine where you can take action:

Think of ways to be more proactive and address the things you can do something about. Your circle of influence will enlarge and your circle of concern will shrink:

Covey distinguishes between the have's ("If only I had...") and the be's ("I can be..."). Focusing on what you don't like is disempowering. Focusing on what you can do is proactive and empowering. "Be part of the solution," Covey suggests, "not part of the problem."

That is excellent, Maria. And after all it is just common sense.
However, some (quite a few I am afraid) just love the comfort zone of whingeing, moaning and immediately dousing anything positive which might, just might, require them to move out of that miserable comfort zone.
For them life is a mish-mash of "shoulds" and "musts" , applicable never to themselves, of course, LOL, must in some kind of abstract to the rest of the world.
Best wishes
Patricia

You know... I am more and more inclined to think recently that there are thousands of hiddens heroes in our society, who deals with determination within their circles of influence: parents, pastors, teachers....
But they are less noisy that the moaners!

How right you are, Maria! I like to think those "ordinary" heroes (of course they are really extraordinary) are in the majority, rather a silent majority though. Every single day I am impressed by the valour, determination, emotional intelligence, and kindness of people struggling with far more difficult situations than the "moaners". Just an example: I think of the army of carers looking after loved ones in their own home (the disabled, both mentally and physically, the elderly, the sick).
And, just a thought: "Health is wealth".

Cuidate mucho.
